I know there are no out of position penalties but what happens if I play my SF with high 50s Reb, as the starting PG. Will he grab less boards because he's now more of a distributor and generally farther from the basket, or will he rebound just as well as he had at SF?

He will grab less rebs then he would've playing sf. He'll also get more assists.

Best passer at PG increases offensive efficiency under this engine, correct? So this is a reb vs. efficiency tradeoff?

On the other hand, his margin of rebounding over the guards he faces might be significant still.

He could grab a decent # of boards.  I have a PG (actually listed as a SG) with a 29 Reb who is averaging 4.0 boards a game.  I think it depends on who is on the floor with him.  In my case the other starters are at 18, 36, 76, and 78.

do we "know" how the engine decides which player gets credited with the rebound? does it determine which side gets the rebound and then look at the rebounding of each guy on the court, adjusted by position and then compare them?

I think that is what happens, but I cannot be sure.

If that's how it's done, then it doesn't really matter where I play him, because all it matters is my team rebounding is higher and I get the rebound. I'm worried that it's more like C and PF, get a 1 modifier, SF .8 modifier, SG .6, PG .4 then it actually matters where I play my high rebound players.

How is the effect of passing determined. Does a 60 passer influence the team more at PG or is it all equal?

IF it works something like that, then depending upon the position penalty it applies to the odds of getting a rebound (not a position penalty on stats) having that high a REB rating might still mean he gets a good % of the teams overall rebounds...
