I nominate dacj501 as the next great star.   At DII, he won Rupp with a 35-0 record (only one senior). He was RU (32-3) in Knight.
Well, he cherrypicked up not once twice in Rupp DII to get that team, so while it's a nice accomplishment, I think that takes away a lot of the luster. Probably sounds jerkier than I mean it to be, but a multiple cherrypick is a multiple cherrypick.

Wanted to bump this thread and ask another best coach question...

In my mind, there is the Mount Rushmore of HD coaches: OR, billy_g, Rails, and LM.  Who is the next great one?  Who is the next coach who is going to freakishly dominant and add himself to the greatest of all-time discussion?  Or is there just too much parity now for a new greatest coach to emerge?  Can girt/daalter be mentioned in this discussion?

I think given daalt/girt's recent success (won 3 NTs in 5 seasons at S. NH, 3 in 6 seasons at Concordia, and 1 at UNC) he definitely needs to go into that elite line w/ OR, billy, rails and LM.  Beyond that I think there is a large group of very good coaches, but I think those 5 are the ones I've noticed who have separated themselves from the pack.

How come I don't make your Phelan list? Or are you looking for .700 win pct across all worlds combined? And what about grecianfox, thorknight, and robs_wife? It looks like they qualify in Phelan as well.

First, thanks Al, that means a lot coming from you. I don't think I deserve to be in this discussion anytime soon, but I would like to take the opportunity to ask fmschwab to provide some more information on his claims?  What does cherrypicked up twice mean exactly?  I'd like to quickly recap my Rupp coaching career. I joined Rupp to take part in the Rupp Mega-Bowl D II festivities. After my D III season, I moved up to an Elizabeth City State squad that was 1-26 the season before. I improved that team every season for 3 seasons, before growing tired of consistently getting my *** kicked in the Central conference, which, at the time, was one of the toughest D II conferences in any world. I decided to give coaching a Hawaii team a try, since I'd heard about the unique challenges, and it sounded like fun. The BYU, Hawaii team I took over was 11-17 the season before I arrived, with a C+ prestige. I recruited something like 7 players that season, and totally rebuilt the roster with my kids by season 2.  After 3 seasons of those aforementioned unique challenges (improving every season), I got tired of Hawaii, and frankly the CC was dull and I missed my buds in the Central. Shaw opened up, and I took the job.  This championship at Shaw was won with only 2 players left over from the previous regime. 2 important players, and there is certainly no guarantee that we'd have done it without them, but I stand behind my season and my win.

FWIW, fmschwab doesn't mention Knight, where Valdosta State almost won it with 100% my guys (I've been there for 9 seasons except the 1 season in the middle I mis-guidedly took a shot at a  D I gig. I missed my squad and returned after 1 season).

I know OP pre-softened his comments so I am not posting with malice.

Again, thanks Al, Shaw's 10 returning players look forward to our match-up with Bowie again this season :)

I really don't want to get into a ******* match with you on this. I'm sure you are a very good coach. BYU, Hawaii had been good, they were coming off one down year. Your 2nd year there you had a total of four of your own recruits, and your third year you had four seniors recruited by the previous guy that were the core of your team. Then powerhouse Shaw opened up, and you took it. Again, I'm not saying that you don't have the ability to win with your own players, I'd sure you do and will continue to win. My only point is that what happened at Shaw, to me at least, is simply not a shining example to be tossed around with the top coaches.

fair enough...I don't think its enough to be compared either frankly, but it was nice to be mentioned. Question - is there somewhere to look back at the makeup of former teams? I tried to find some before I posted, coz i couldn't remember exactly who I recruited when - and I couldn't find it...

ETA: found it. 3 of those guys did play roles season 45 at BYU. Shaw is a lot more my team than that though.

ETA again: for the record - BYU Hawaii was decent under tatorsalad (3 straight 1st rd NT losses), not so good for the 2 seasons under the next coach (who preceded me) (14-14 103 RPI, 11-17 128), and while I had 4 of those seniors, 1 hardly played, 1 was a big part of my gameplan, and the other 2 started with little distro, not really the core of my team. I do see your point, and agree in general, but don't want the particulars to be inaccurate...

As for Shaw, they were good before I got there, and I kept them good...only 2 players were holdovers, only 1 started. NPOY was my kid.  Since we agree that my accomplishment is not quite legendary, lets leave it unless there are more details that I've left out that are relevant...in this case, we can agree to more or less agree...

yeah i think he has the #1 d1 10yr dynasty of all time with iowa state in world 1 according to the dynasty rankings. i personally put it at the 3rd best d1 run ever but in any case, it was damn impressive.
