Agree with Mike.  If you can think of a way to ask them politely to re-evaluate their answer...

I think it's probably a combination of what Mike and I are suggesting; the DitR re-set his "true" projected stamina way over 100, he tried to go to 102 or 103 in the offseason, and the engine gagged.

Yeah, I am trying to politely call BS, but they are having none of it.  They insist it was the repeat, despite hundred of players repeating for me in the past without problems.
