Defensive Freaks - How to evaluate? Topic

I pretty much ignore DE at D3, but that's always been my style.

I wouldn't sign that guy, his RB and BLK are too low to use inside, and his SPD is too low to play anywhere else.

IMO, his best position is SF in a zone defense.  If he has a lot of high potential, he could actually become a decent SF.

Most great defenders that can defend wing players have to have some amount of speed and athleticism to go with their excellent defensive skills.

If a guy has very poor speed, and he's covering someone w/ 75 speed, that def rating will be negated very quickly.

I'll be on the other side, I like him, I think net def is calculated something along the lines:

net def = (ath+sp+2*def)/4, so 90+30+90*2 is 300, divided by 4 is 75,

that is a much better def sg than you will get in d3, or sf, or pf - I like him as a role player, he esp is valuable in a zone or FCP, where his high def will average out some of your worse players.  I am experimenting with a frosh like him, only he is far worse, only a 400 total, with 80-32-80 for ath/sp/def for my lakeland d3 rebuild project, I project him as a 3 year backup, and a starter his sr season, which means he likely will never start, but I have a very low def star guard, I view such a def specialist as a nice complimentary player.

one more thing, this is a matter of context, my team with the def d3 guru is a b- type prestige team.  Some of getting such a team better is making choices, some of those commenting here have A+ type programs that are seeing much better recruits than this type of def guru, but part of building a team is choosing between some guys that are just ok at everything vs some specialists ... I have always opted for a blending of some balanced players with some specialists, so the type of guy described here is my type of guy, assuming I have some other players who are very balanced, and pretty good.

I'd agree with OR on overall defensive ability, except add BLK to the equation.

IMO, BLK is at least as important as DE for bigs, less so for guards (though still in the equation).

I'd also add that the relative importance of each rating changes depending on the set you run.
For press, I'd say speed and DE are about equal, while DE is more important for M2M.

This guy can actually score if you can get his spd to 40+ and bh to 40s as well. I have a 90/40 guy whos shooting .550+ and scoring 12ppg.
