Redshirting: is it worth it? Topic

The only three reasons not to redshirt (IMO)-

1. All of your player is getting a good chunk of PT this year
2. All of your Frosh's player won't accept it (And WE drops too low or too much)
3. To keep your classes balanced (or unbalanced, if you prefer).

It's definitely worth it to RS. Sometimes you might see guys not using RS because they are trying to balance their classes or nobody at a position they could afford a RS accepted it. It's always better to have a player max'd out for two seasons rather than one. The class I just finished up in Knight, I'm going to hope I can RS a 495 rated D3 player. Simply because he's not going to be very helpful this season and if I can get him for a 5th year he'll be incredibly dominant for 2 seasons rather than just 1.

Right now my redshirt is on range for the high thirties or forty in improvement.

Here is the player I redshirted this season: http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=1780119

IMO he's a far better player and still has enough time for some more improvement with the remaining time in the season.  Redshirting makes a big difference.

Maybe I should ask another question here too.  What is the minimum WE you want a player to have to RS him?  I'm assuming at some point WE is too low to make it worth RSing a guy.

I redshirt almost every season if possible.  Its a no brainer in my mind.  The player may only gain 20 or 30 points, but those points combined with the IQ  upgrade makes the choice very rewarding. I actually have tried to redshirt some of my best players just to max our there full potential.   I look for a minimum of 40 at WE.

Why would this be the case. If the player won't get real PT in his FR season, then he should be RSed even if his WE is 15. Additional improvement in one extra season's worth of practice is always better than no improvement. Having said that, I prefer to RS high WE guys but I have RSed players with 20 WE and saw them gain 30 points in their RS FR season. This is free improvement.

RS is very useful for guys with low WE, because it gives them more time to improve. Also if you have a team you've been with for a while you don't usually start guys until their junior or senior years, so if you RS a low WE guy he gets to start his sophomore year and has 3 years of playing big minutes which help him improve and boost his WE.

dont neglect the IQ effect - which can in my opinion be at least as important as the skills effects - you get his IQ up in your system before he needs to play, which makes him much more effective

I've also found, at oen time, a redshirt useful for ensuring I actually got the high potential improvement out of a single digit rating - the redshirt season helped get it high enough that normal improvement could take over in time to actually achieve the high potential.  Presumably, with the recruit generation tweaks, that scenario should be less common as a reason.
