Pitch Count for Relievers *Under* 1 IP/G ... Topic

Since the general rule of thumb is to expect about 15 pitches per inning for a Pitcher (I think I read somewhere you could calculate 16 and still be safe), I'm curious how you guys pre-set your relief pitchers who average under 1 IP/G for their given season.

For example, I really like 2006 Chad Bradford as a key reliever for a team concept I am working on.  The only thing concerning me is his IP/G of 0.90.  I'm not quite sure if I set him up for a max of 15 pitches (assuming Sparky will sometimes pitch over that) if that is considered to be dangerously past his primary efficacy zone.

But it also seems like a waste to set him up to pitch 10 pitches max per game.

Thoughts?  Thank you!

A pitcher's in game fatigue is based on the pitch count when he starts the plate apearance. Thats why sparky lets him throw over. So, if you havea guy set to a 15 max, and starts a PA at 13 and finishes at 19, he was just fine. You can set it at 15 if you want without worry.

Also, one ofthe few good things about LIVE is the ability to see how fatigue works. Load up your team and put that guy in to pitch.

I think there's a formula for figuring someone's exact IP/G. If they have a lot of Ks, like most modern pitchers do, then you can comfortably set them to 10/15 or 15/15 even if their IP/G is around 0.90.

All helpful stuff, guys.  Thank you very much.

I'll experiment with rounding up a little like that.

I would set a guy like Bradford at 15/15 without any worries.

Yeah, .9 = 15/15 pull 1 for me.

Interesting thread.  Do most of you guys set the TPC and MPC the same? With Bradford 15/15 for example.  Or does it depend on the pitcher's role?

Depends on the role for me.

Almost always the same. Since pitchers aren't "streaky" in the sim the way they may be at times in real life, it makes sense to run your staff like clockwork rather than put a bunch of variables in there.

It's interesting you say that pitchers aren't streaky in Sim.  It seems to me that players are indeed streaky in Sim.  For instance, I have '68 Bob Gibson and he started out rather mediocre but then has gotten incredible hot over his last 5-6 starts.  I guess it's really law of averages for his Sim numbers to wind up close to his actual season numbers.  I also have Ritchie Asburn who was hitting .260 for a while and now is on a tear and brought his average up to .290...his season average for that year was .344 so I expect he will continue on this tear for a while.  It seems that resting a player now and then even if they are at 100% or moving them up and down in the lineup will effect their play.

"seems" being the key word. Eyeballs are deceiving. Use your mind instead...
