Just checked the short relievers on all three of my teams.  Only one guy was drafted, either by me or some other owner, lower than the second round.

Interstingly (to me, anyways) . . . my short relievers in Coop are old-timers.  Three of the four were all around at the creation of the world (now in S17).

I think you can find good relievers (not great) pretty cheap and pretty easily.  Trade throw ins, waiting a bit during FA, comparitively cheap Internationals, etc.

AlexFox came as a trade throw in really.  He was REALLY cheap and is pretty good.    1.12 WHIP/2.42 ERA  56/74 on splits  But throws 83 on GBs and has an 85 1st pitch.

JulianFurcal is a stud type guy....but I waited a bit in FA and got him for $3.3 and $3.0 for two years.  WHIP under 1.19 the last 5 years.  Throws 100+ innings.  He was a nice purchase.

PeterShin came as an Int. FA.  Got him for $1.5M.  Will be a bargain.  Will be in the MLB pen next year...maybe later this year.  AA/AAA WHIP of 1.1 and ERA of 2.00.  Control is low, but with splits of (next year) 60-84 (est) and one pitch over 80 and another close...he'll be a fine reliever.  He's the kind of guy you can steal in Int. FA.

RandallColes came in a multi-player trade.  He'll be fine, next year.

Tried a new ranking system last night.  This guy came in at #33:

Dur 43
Stm 21
Con 62
VL  69
VR  71
Vel  92
GB  79
P1  81
P2 80
P3 53

In my last two drafts, my #33 was picked 157th(by me)  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Del Yamamoto and 178th  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ron Sanders.   A short RP that was projected to be roughly what I described in post #1 but with more durability and a defensive catcher.   I guess my new system wasn't much different than the old one.

I think the value of this kind of guy (strong but not élite performance, few IP or AB) is different for AL vs. NL teams.  It is my experience that you only really need 24 guys (13 position, 11 P) to run a solid NL team without fatigue, so I value having a 25th man who can do one thing well over limited PA or IP (defensive C, PR/defensive CF, low ST/DUR RP).  In the AL, with the DH, I find I need a 14th hitter to keep everybody at or near 100%, so I may not have a way to roster a guy like this, and so I'm more likely to rate a durable guy with borderline major league talent ahead of him.

Odd.  I've always felt that you could get away with a 24 man roster easier in the AL than in the NL.

In the NL, due to the pitchers hitting, you need a deeper bench for pinch hitters, plus you could tend to go through more pitchers in a game due to them being removed for PH's.

I checked after dedel's post(I have 2 AL, 2 NL teams).   Significant playing team by position players was virtually the same.  I went with 150 AB(25% of the games).   11 and 14 on my NL teams, 12 and 13 on my AL teams.

Interesting, maybe it's just my approach.  I always run a deep bench because I platoon a lot, so having only 5 usable PH in the NL isn't killing me.  It's also interesting that Mike runs 12 pitchers on his AL teams; I think that makes sense, since there are more PA to cover, since the DH probably converts about 75 or so PA from outs to hits, leading to at least one and maybe more additional PA for each.

I don't think there's a system that can handle slotting SP and RP effectively. No matter what I do, I always have to manually bump up some RPs.

I believe I've only run a 12 man AL staff once (for a couple of seasons) when I had a decent but very low stamina RP (35 IP per season) guy on my staff.  I normally run an 11 man staff otherwise.  Some manual intervention is required every so often to keep everybody in good shape.

I adjust my pitching staff, at all levels, virtually every cycle.
