say you have 6 juniors and want to recruit one more.  can you redshirt either the incoming junior or a returning junior to clear space?

No.  Redshirting occurs after recruiting.  There'd be no way to enforce it.  I think you CAN redshirt a senior, which would give you 7 next year.  Not positive of that, though.

well, there is a redshirt button next to all my returning players right now (pre signing day).  are you sure i can't redshirt one of them right now?

You can redshirt him, but you can't bring in another, as he's still a junior this year.

The button's there, and you can apply it now, but you can remove a redshirt any time all season.  So you can't really guarantee he won't play until the season is over.
