D3 school going after d2 players in recruiting Topic

is it likely a d3 school can pick up a d2 player in recruiting or is it just a waste of money?

Search for forums for pulldowns and dropdowns... the answer is yes... but the the answer to how to do it is more complicated.

Pulling down a D2 player or a D2 player dropping down to D3

Mostly you are looking for the lower level D2 Players, do search the forums, there is a lot more into on it.

qvt1c, here is the Reader's Digest version for pulldowns:

Understand that some of the players you see as DII players with your C+ prestige may be on the DIII list for higher prestige schools.
Understand that there is always a risk that a DII school or higher prestige DIII school may jump in on you but also understand that pulldowns are the best way to become/stay competitive.
Stay within 350 miles of your campus, otherwise it becomes too expensive. The closer the player is to your campus the less expensive he will be to recruit.
Look at the overall total of the highest 4-year DIII player you can see on your list.
Add 10 points to that total and that should roughly give you an idea of the highest player rating to look for in DII. (Add 25 points if the player is within 70 miles of your campus).
Use the search filters and narrow down the list based on your position needs.
Once you have identified some potential DII players, send them each one (1) phone call.
When you get the feedback, forget about any player who does not respond or who responds negatively. Those who say you are a backup can be pulled down.
Decide which of the players who said you are a backup you want to go after and send them 1 phone call, 1 letter, 1 coach call, 10 scouting trips, and the schollie offer.
This will likely get you on their considering list and then you can just recruit normally. If this doesn't get you on their considering list then send a couple more scouting trips each cycle until they do consider you. There is no need to send Home Visits or Campus Visits to pull down a player. There is no need to offer starts or promise minutes.
Other coaches may use variations of this method but this is what has worked successfully for me even at low prestige levels.

keep in mind in considering Weena's accurate summary, that all of this goes out the window if a school or equal or better prestige is doing the same thing - consider who your competition is or could be.....if there is a nearby school with better prestige that might go for the same guys, you need to figure out a plan - does he need the positions you need, do you want to wait to see who he chases, do you want to gambleand see if you can get your top choice, does he run a man defense and therefore need strong DEF ??? etc etc

Incidentally, I completely disagree with the notion that you can't compete with better-prestige D3 schools.  If the player will talk to you (ie they give you the backup message when you call them) then any other D3 school is unlikely to have a huge advantage over you in terms of recruiting them.  But if another school is recruiting them it will still cost you much more.  Battling is generally to be avoided at D3, but that doesn't mean you CAN'T win a battle just because another school has better prestige.  At D1 prestige is killer; at D2 and D3 it's not a big deal.  The big issue with battling D2 schools is that they have more money per scholarship, so I wouldn't try to do that until you have more experience recruiting.
