ACC North Preview First

3/15/2011 2:08 PM
ACC North:

Duke

Last Season: 27-7 (11-5 ACC) NT Final Four

Who’s In: # 6 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Tony Cerda, James Thompson, Frank Watson.

Who to Watch:  Pre-Season 1st Team All-American John Levinson, Pre-Season 2nd Team All-Americans Harley Kopp and Gerald Keller.

Non-Conf: Cupcake except for Northwestern and St. Johns.

Final Projection: Duke will go as far as their tri-captains Levinson, Kopp & Keller will take them. 8 underclassmen will have to fit in quickly or get out of the way of the big 3 for Duke to succeed this year.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT – Could go deep depending on the freshmen contributions and pairings/matchups.

Georgia Tech

Last Season:  15-15 (6-10 ACC) PI 3rd RD

Who’s In: John Gerena, John Schlemmer.

Who to Watch: Ted Johnson, David Lynch, Rogelio Romano.

Non-Conf: Tough, highlighted by Stanford, Washington and Oregon.

Final Projection: A tough non-conference schedule should prepare Tech for another grueling ACC season. Tech should improve on last season’s 6-10 conference record.. If not, no tourney..

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT – Ted Johnson will be the man for the yellow jackets and they will go as far as he can take them.

Miami

Last Season: 5-22 (0-16 ACC)

Who’s In: Miami returns all from last year’s team.

Who to Watch: Thomas Fletcher, Eugene Deshields, Ronald Hammon.

Non-Conf: Cupcake except for Baylor.

Final Projection: With everyone back it’s a no-brainer that the Canes should improve on last years 0-16 conference record. The team must learn how to finish off weaker opponents to be successful this season. Thomas Fletcher will be the key cog to the Canes success.

Projected Post-season Tournament: PI – Lock. NT is in reach if Fletcher has a big year.

UNC

Last Season: 35-0 (16-0 ACC) National Tournament Champions

Who’s In: Timothy Belcher, Brian Peterson.

Who to Watch: Pre-Season 3rd Team All-American Douglas Theus.

Non-Conf: Cupcake.

Final Projection: Loss of talent due to graduation and early entries, the Heels will need a couple miracles this season to be competitive. Speculation that head coach Lostmyth is retiring at the end of the year are widespread. The team will have to focus on the task at hand.  Fouls will have to be at a minimum for this team to stay in games. One player (Theus) may not be enough for them to be successful

Projected Post-season Tournament: None

Virginia

Last Season: 17-11 (9-7 ACC) NT 1st RD

Who’s In: # 21 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Manuel Janson.

Who to Watch: William Fountain, Eddie Kegley, Michael Lajoie.

Non-Conf: Middle of the road.

Final Projection: Virginia is in good shape to get back to the NT with their big 3. A good solid recruiting class will add the needed depth to make sure they are in every game.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT is in reach and likely if the Cavaliers’ Fountain-Kegley-Lajoie put up big numbers.

Virginia Tech

Last Season: 9-18 (4-12 ACC)

Who’s In: # 30 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Victor Corman, Kevin House, Troy Noland.

Who to Watch: Edward Hall, Edward Kaul, Christopher Posey.

Non-Conf: Middle of the road.

Final Projection: Will have to improve on last years ACC record to get to the dance. Kaul and Posey will lead this squad. If Hall can become their 3rd weapon, the Hokies could be dancin.

Projected Post-season Tournament: Outside shot of NT berth.

ACC North Projected Finish –
Duke
Miami
Georgia Tech
Virginia
Virginia Tech
UNC

ACC South Preview
3/15/2011 8:52 PM
ACC South:

Boston College

Last Season: 24-7 (12-4 ACC) NT Sweet 16

Who’s In: # 25 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Randall Collins, Robert Mitchell.

Who to Watch:  Dmitry Tyminski, Travis Reese, Jermaine Siple.

Non-Conf: Toughest in the ACC, highlighted by UCLA, Northwestern, USC, Washington and Stanford.

Final Projection: The Eagles are not satisfied with their back to back Sweet 16 appearances after cutting the nets down in Season 32. This team has Final 4 talent and is playing one heck of a non-conference schedule. Should win games on talent alone but if there is one flaw to this team it is free throw shooting.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT – Elite 8. If freshmen Collins and Mitchell can contribute along talented trio Tyminski, Reese and Siple, Coach Thorknight could be on his way to another Final 4.

Clemson

Last Season:  14-15 (5-11 ACC) PI 1st RD

Who’s In: Clemson returns all from last years team.

Who to Watch: Jasper Minnis, Richard Briggs and Micheal Weiland.

Non-Conf: Middle of the road to tough, highlighted by Vanderbilt and Kansas State.

Final Projection: Clemson will be battle-tested after non-conference play. The Tigers 8 upperclassmen will lead the way to the post season.

Projected Post-season Tournament: PI – Lock. NT is possible if the Tigers can steal a few wins in the very tough South.

Florida State

Last Season: 23-8 (11-5 ACC) NT Sweet 16

Who’s In: ACC Best# 4 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Bradford Raynor, Mark Mutter and Robert Payne.

Who to Watch: Pre-Season 1st Team All-American Luke Gaylor and Pre-Season 2nd Team All-American Bill Bastien along with Dale Goods.

Non-Conf: Middle of the road highlighted by UCLA, Kansas and BYU.

Final Projection: A definite National championship contender. The Seminoles have 5 Seniors to power this team and should take them deep into the dance. The ACC’s fastest and most athletic team could dominate this season.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT – Final 4. Along with Baylor, Texas and Michigan State, the Seminoles have the talent to cut the nets down this year.

Maryland

Last Season: 24-8 (10-6 ACC) NT Elite 8

Who’s In: James Pou.

Who to Watch: Pre-Season Honorable Mention All-American Brent Dinardo along with Samuel Jenner.

Non-Conf: Cupcake.

Final Projection:  Will go as far as Dinardo and Jenner can take them. Should be in the NT hunt.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT. Might have to go undefeated in non-conference and then win 9 games in conference to be an NT lock. Coach mniven has proven he can get his team to the dance.

North Carolina State

Last Season: 18-12 (8-8 ACC) NT 2nd RD

Who’s In: Donald Smith (Academic Non-Qualifier).

Who to Watch: Pre-Season Honorable Mention All-American Gustavo Ricci along with Karl Jones and Frederick Langenfeld.

Non-Conf: Cupcake.

Final Projection: Two years removed from the Final 4, hbmerlin looks to guide his Wolfpack past the 2nd RD this season. Leading the charge is the Italian Stallion Gustavo Ricci. Ricci will be looked upon to defend the ball and score. He will from time to time have to find an open teammate or two.
Projected Post-season Tournament: NT. Depending on pairings/matchups, the Wolfpack have 2nd RD talent. Ricci and Lagenfeld could led them to the Sweet 16.

Wake Forest –

Last Season: 13-15 (4-12 ACC)

Who’s In: # 11 Recruiting Class, Notables include: Robert O’Hara and John Sands.

Who to Watch: Richard Harder and the 3 R’s (Reese, Reed and Ricci).

Non-Conf: Soft except for UCLA and Providence.

Final Projection: Five years is a long time for coach vandydave and the Demon Deacons to be absent from the NT. That will change this year as senior leaders and frosh O’Hara and Sands join together. Free throw shooting is Wake’s only issue.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NT. Sweet 16 talent and maybe more if Harder and Reese shoot well.

ACC South Projected Finish –
Florida State
Boston College
North Carolina State
Wake Forest
Maryland
Clemson
