Recruiting in Hawaii Topic

I just took over Hawaii Pacific and was wondering what the recruiting roadblocks would be. I know, I know I probably should have asked before I took it over but I wanted a new challenge. Now, I don't even know who to put on my recruiting board because I don't have a clue of the cost involved. Anyone with knowledge of this I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

I've had Alaska-Anchorage for a while, which is a similar animal.  I check for Alaska guys that I might be interested in and maybe some foreign guys (since they will be long distance for everyone else).  Besides that, I generally wait for signings to start so I'm less likely to get involved in a battle (which are difficult to win on the mainland and other coaches will see the word "Alaska" and know this) and FSS is a little cheaper.  I've found you can still find good players.  This wouldn't work as well in D1.

A lot of Hawaii and Alaska teams recruit only local and international. They mostly stay away from the states (for good reason). I have seen Alaska-Anchorage and Hawaii-Pacific in Crum be very successful, consistent post-season teams. Do your best to grab any good local recruits and you do have a distance advantage over the states for some Asian and Australian players, although it doesn't give you a big advantage, it could save you a thousand or so by the end of recruiting. Don't get discouraged though, because if a couple great recruits come out of Hawaii, you don't have a lot of competition for them. Just make sure you don't let a higher prestige swoop in and steal one.

EDIT: Haha I just realized you are in Crum. There are some good players in Hawaii this year so look for pulldowns.

Thanks, i'm looking forward to the challenge. I may not be this excited next recruiting season. LOL

Well you'll only lose one player next season...and two the next so there is bound to be enough good recruits. Just don't be afraid to cut players. They aren't yours so you won't take a big loyalty hit.

Pretty much what everyone else here has said.  In Smith all the Hawaii teams have been NT teams at some point, and they do it by grabbing the best local guys.  There is only one Div. 1 school in the state, so there are plenty of dropdowns in the 490-560 range.  I have seen some ridiculous signings by HI teams in DII b/c there was no competition for them.  You will be especially in good shape if there are no other human coaches at Chaminade, HI Hilo, and BYU HI.  They also sign some west coast mainland players from CA, OR, and WA as well, but those guys usually come after the initial signing round.

Chaminade and D1 Hawaii both have humans but the other 2 are sims. Thanks for all your guys input that will definitely get me started.

There are a total of 9 D1 recruits in Hawaii.

Saw byu-Hawaii play in national championship d2 today. Great game, hope you have same good fortune. There should be some recruiting edge for recruiting in paradise.

I saw just a bit of that game.  I've been wondering for about half the season whether Jet Chiang might be a guy who could be a surprise 2nd-round draft pick.

I saw Jet Chang turn it over on about 3 straight possessions then put up a bad shot at the end of the game. He scored a lot, but he's no Jimmer.

I had Hawaii-Pacific for 3 years in Allen ... I would always buy California, Texas, and Hawaii for FSS.  I signed guys equally from international, Local Hawaii, California, and Texas.

I was careful with the CA and TX signings though.  Go after guys later and I only did undecideds who I thought were upgrades to local guys.

My purpose in picking TX and CA was that they usually have the most recruits and I could find guys not taken who would be good with growth.

Now that an update as vastly reduced the Div-I dropdowns to Div-II, it might not be as good a strategy to look in CA and TX.
