I hit him leadoff, and he has good hitters behind him.  He looks to me like he should be a good, if not great leadoff hitter, but he is not hitting anywhere near the average I would expect.

His VR is pretty low for a major leaguer. Contact of 75 is decent, but not enough to overcome the low split. This player can make up for the low split with a 94 contact and good power.

Also, small sample size. My guess is he should be closer to a .250 BA with a .360 OBP like his career.

He's just an average BL player with a great eye.   His career OPS of .784 with a .249 average looks about right.  Maybe even a little high.

He'll walk a lot and steal more than a few bases.  He does that.  His eye is the only thing that would make me consider starting him.  And actually, for a lead-off hitter, his durability is a touch low.

What were you expecting?

Sometimes when player underperforms to your expectations, it's because expectations were too high.  Sorry....

it's the vR rating.  Remember that a rating of 50 is average for ALL players in the world (ML and minors).  Meaning, roughly half of all the players in existence in that world are better then him at hitting righties.  It took me a long time to realize that high (70+) vR/vL ratings can overcome other poor ratings for both hitters and pitchers, but rarely do guys with low vR/vL do anything spectacular, regardless of the other ratings.  Also, don't get sidetracked by that OVR - I tend to get excited by seeing a high OVR and quit being an objective evaluator.

just curious - what are your manager settings for hit and run?

I guess I was expecting too much.  I thought the great eye and good contact would compensate more for the average righty split.  (Nanu - my settings for hit and run are average.)  I guess I'm a poor hitting evaluator, as my teams usually lead the world in pitching and fielding, but are almost always poor offensively. 

Ontiveros will begin his arbitration years next season.  With that 88 ovr rating, I assume he will have fairly hefty demands within a season or two.  I'll need to decide whether to try to move him.

This guy is a real anomaly. <a style="color:black;" href="http://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2484905" target="_blank">Jordan Bonds</a>. I only start him vR. In that role he has a very good OBP and has never been CS at the ML level(80-0). But I've never seen a guy with such high CNCT & BE and such low splits.

Speed, contact, baserunning and eye make a good combination.   12 of his 50 hits were infield hits.  Although, to be fair, his career OPS is lower than the world average.   His SB makes him a slightly above average hitter in your world.   If he could field, he'd be worth something.

Considering I expected this guy (http://wisjournal.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2560285) to stink and he has been decent I would say your guy is underperforming.  I kept my guy on the rsoter as a backup and he has been good enough to command regular at bats.

I agree.  I don't think that Geraldo Santayana is overperforming, so you should expect some improvement.

Their career OPS is almost identical.    Stargell's average OPS is just a bit higher.    Considering all those factors, including ratings, the results for Santayana and Ontiveros are about what you'd expect.
