I am looking 2 different 1B for a theme league, salary is not a huge issue, I have too many ip now and could afford both just fine.

87 Don Mattingly 327 378 559 30HR  A/B- 629 PA 5.86 Mil
75 Steve Garvey  319 351 476 18HR  A-/A+ 704 PA 6.62 Mil

I know normalization helps Garvey and Hurts Mattingly but Mattingly's # stats are all still better all around. Both should have enough PA to bat 3rd or 4th. Mattingly seems to be the choice,What confuses me is the nearly 800 k difference in salary. I had an A+ range 1B recently make 23 + plays but is that really worth it? Mattingly is lefty and Garvey righty which is advantage Mattingly as well.

Who is really the better option here?

Most of the cost differential is due to Garvey's 75 more PAs (705 vs 629) My guess is you'd have to sit Mattingly a time or two if you batted him 3rd to keep him at 100% (Where is that handy - dandy chart of PAs per lineup slot? I was looking for it to bump for this post but couldn't find it) I'd go with Mattingly especially since Garvey's A+ isn't an A+++++ or anything like it.

On average here are the drafted PA required per line-up spot.  The factors in a 10% allowance over drafted PAs.  This does not consider that typical line-up have high obp at the top and low obp at the bottom.

How fast are they?

I'd almost always go for the better bat, except for range at 2B and possibly SS, and also catcher arm.

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but every Mattingly I've ever used has underperformed...

yeah, mpitt76, I would be very unhappy if I had to draft either of those 2.

In a 1980-89 franchise theme league ($100MM cap) still playing, my 1980 Steve Garvey's stats after 121 games:  .318/.353/.536, 30 HR, 102 RBI, 5 good plays ($6.11MM)

I don't know how this compares with the 1975 Garvey, but this Garvey is outperforming his real life stats.
