I normally send a phone call to both the recruits and their coaches at the beginning of recruiting. If I were just to call their coach instead, would they still contact me to 'dropdown'? Or would I need to call them at the beginning of recruiting?

Either one will work, you don't need to do both

The recruit may or may not drop down. Even if he does, you are giving the sim time to build up considering credits. I would use FSS for the state the sim is in and check the "Word on the Street". If it says the player is "tight" with the sim or anything similar then forget him and move on. If the Word says the player is "not completely sold on the sim" or something similar then I would use Scouting Trips to pull him down.
