End of first season. What to do during playoffs? Topic

Should I just go golfing?   Kidding...

I just completed my first regular season of HBD.  I missed the playoffs, but only by a handful of games (weak division). I finished 76-84 and improvement from a 62 win team the previous year.  So, I'm pretty happy with that.

What should I be doing before the playoffs end?  Do I need to cut loose or demote or promote players?

  • Promote prospects.
  • Check your departing FA's and determine who you may want to retain, and who you may let walk.  Resign the ones you want to retain.
  • Do the same with arb-eligible guys.  Determine if there are any who you might want to release (but don't release them until next season).
  • Check to see if you have any players with options for next season.  If you do, decide if you want to retain them or cut them loose (assuming team or mutual options).
  • Come up with a contingiency plan for any mutual or player option guys who you may want to retain if decline their options next season.
  • Put together a rough draft of what you think your ML roster will look like next season.
  • Determine if you have any prospects who may be ML ready for next season.
  • Get a rough idea of what your needs may be in FA next season.

Great answer!

You'll also want to look into getting a 2nd team.  There is a long gap between playoffs, rollover, league filling up.  Having one team only will drive you crazy.

And to clarify a little about "promoting prospects," you want to make sure that every player who has the potential of even being a fringe member/25th man on your ML roster gets moved up one level, whether he makes the following minor-league team better or not.  However, with real, ML quality prospects you should avoid promoting them to the ML until they have 4 years experience OR you can absolutely assure that they will be full-time starters.  Otherwise you risk stunting their growth...

Is there any difference in promoting prospects at the end of the season vs the beginning of the next season?

Higher chance of retirement in the off season.

This board is the best.  Great stuff.

Follow up question.  Why do I not want to release players until next season?   If I have minor league guys on my rosters who are dead weight and have plenty of filler guys to promote, should I release those guys now or wait until next season?  At what point do those guys count against my salary cap? It's a small hit, but avoidable none the less.

My opinion;

If you release prior to next season, you don't know who's going to retire.
If many players retire, even filler, then you could be short staffed.
If you are short staffed, then players are pitching or hitting when fatigued.
If fatigued, they are more likely to be injured.
If they are injured, they will not develop, and will probably regress (leaving the injury bug out of this thought)
This could be a scrub, this could be a future star.

My fully stocked, 30 players per level minor leagues is less than $6M. This is barely above 3% of your budget. What are you saving if you cut 4 players per level? Just take care of your minors, you'll thank me later.
