Post for some advice First season coaching Fastbrk Topic

Hey coaches,

I am coaching Thomas in Wooden...this is the first time I've taken over a fastbreak offense and I am having a devil of a time managing the game plans and getting blown out like a d+ d3 school twice in 5 games.

Can you adjust the pace with fastbreak or is it fast paced the entire time with no slowing or speeding up in situations?

I'd appreciate some insight.

ath/spd/stamina. Those 3 are extremely important.

And after looking at your team, I would say you are lacking in all 3 departments. What's hurting you the most right now is the stamina, but a successful FB offense should have team ath/spd over 50.

Well>  You can go normal or uptempo.  YOu need to definitely go normal.  Keep Woodford in the game as long as plausible. . .

My advice would be to stop jumping from team to team capitalizing on winning programs and build one

sorry, not a personal thing but just one of my biggest pet peeves are the coaches who jump to a new school every 2 years to capitalize on a team that has been winning or is set up to win for the next season or 2.

Your money to spend though so whatever

Thanks for the insight, tianyi...that's just the kind of advice I was looking for when I posted this topic.  mjp8 you play the game the way you like and I will play it the way I like.

its not a pet peeve of mine. but, it is certainly the reality that if you want to be a good coach, you should listen to his advice. i really dont care either way. there is just 0 doubt you are better off to build a team yourself - if your goal is to be a highly successful coach. sure - short term, its not as good, because your team sucks. but in the end, its way better, not even close.

on fb, i would say that ath/spd/sta comment is definitely true. also, lp/per are less important than any other offense.

Which is more important in the FB...ballhandling or passing?

for sure ath, spd and stam matter

for sure you cannot run slow - your choices are normal and fast

rather few teams run fastbreak, so you wont get as much experienced forum advice as with other systems - may be that you just need to play around with it for your first season or two there and see what works for you

Don't be the Heat.  There are no shortcuts to being successful.

Running fast break on a few teams. One major recruiting goal has been to recruit Pf,C with high speed, reb potential. If you can get a center with 20-25+ speed and eventually have a Jr,sn with 40+ in d3, great advantage. rebounding is a must in the fb especially when your trying to separate yourself from other good teams. The best outcome in recruiting is to find a big within 200 miles with high in ath, spd, reb. If I find them, that is my number 1 guy to pulldown.
