Thanks for compiling it, shqipta.  Interesting that no Big Ten teams made the top 15.  I'll be interested to see if that holds true this season. You obviously spend some time and have fun with the game. Makes the MWC a fun conference to be in, I'll bet.
7/19/2011 6:07 PM
Thanks Shqipta.  I started a blog on CUSA because of your ratings.  Please take a look at when you can!

Excellent stuff, shqipta. Very solid. Can you give us some general explanation of how your system works, without giving away your secret formula? Also, are the total ratings from last year available anywhere? I'd like to see how much I underachieved last year...
7/20/2011 8:52 AM
noleaniml-I first got the idea from bhazelwood's gdreports in Gridiron Dynasty. But then seble posted a thread about how he was going to create a way for each coach to create their own custom formula, by weighting each attribute so that coaches that prefered ATH and DEF and disregarded DUR, could get a Overall Rating for a player that more closely related to the player's actual abilities than the Total Rating that we are given now. I bumped the thread in the main forum, and hyperlinked to it here so you can see what I'm talking about:

http://www.whatifsports.com/forums/Posts.aspx?ForumID=30&TopicID=433659&ThreadID=9335303#l_9335303

I've been using that type of system for a few years now, and as I was doing the MWC previews, I put together a spreadsheet so that I could figure out the Adjusted Overall Ratings, I'd been using on my own players, for every MWC player on every team. Then I realized that I could use the exact same spreadsheet (12 spaces for players fits nicely with 12 team conferences) and just copy and paste in the "Team Ratings" stuff for each team and the spreadsheet then gives me a weighted overall score. I use three different forumlas, get three different weighted scores, add the three together, include small formula that adjusts for teams that don't have 12 players (as in pre-recruiting), and come up with the SRP for each team. The conference teams are all added, and then divided by 12 to give the conference score. Now that I've got the fields and formula's set up, it doesn't take that long to come up with the SRPI.

It doesn't take into account IQs or FT grade. Also if a team has walkons it can really hurt their score because they are calculated along with everyone else, which when I have walkons, I never play them a single minute, and as long as I have 10 players it doesn't really matter.

Basically the point is to give every team the next step past the overall "Team Rating" that you can get, by adjusting that overall "Team Rating" to more accurately reflect the talent level of your team. Does that mean you'll always win teams rated higher than you? No. But like RPI it gives you a better idea of where you stand than simply comparing your unadjusted Team Rating to your conference mates.

Unfortunately I don't have anything beyond the MWC for previous seasons.

Hope that helps.
7/20/2011 10:43 AM
Yeah, that was a great explanation. Specifically, I was wondering about you handled walk-ons and you addressed it directly. Thanks for your work... it definitely gives us one more thing to obsess about.
7/20/2011 4:30 PM
How are you pulling the data from the site? I might mess around with doing something similar, however, I have no idea how to mine the data.
7/21/2011 5:15 AM
Here are the results v. sRPI predicted results for game one in the MWC. As you can see the sRPI was 11-1 in predicting the winner, although Washington St. nearly upset Utah. The only wrong prediction was DePaul (coached by coolman97865) winning over Denver (sim ai coached), which with the small difference in sRPI and the fact that sim coaches tend to misuse their talent more than human coaches, is not surprising.  I'm not so good at math, but that looks like about 92% right. Not bad for day one.

Great stuff shqipta, nice to see the Buffs that high on the list. I thought Oregon, Miami, and Arizona looked like legit title contenders just glancing at the rosters in the preaseason. Thanks for your work

32-4 after three games, that's 89% right. The four losses were (1) a Human coached Team over came a 4 sRPI difference against a Sim Team at home; (2) Alabama over came a 4 sRPI difference to eke out a 1 point win; (3) New Mexico overcame a 2 sRPI difference to beat Central Florida; and  (4) TCU, with home-court advantage, overcame a 2 sRPI difference to win by 4.  I'd say all things considered, at least comparing MWC teams, the sRPI has done pretty well for three games.
