Decent major league starters? Topic

Roberts probably deserves a spot on the 25-man roster.  He won't be great, but you could do worse for a long reliever / spot starter.

I'd only promote Stanley if I had a rash of injuries and there was nothing better on the waiver wire / free agent pool.  He won't be effective with control, splits, and pitches only flirting with 70.

Stanley's problem isn't control/splits.   His velocity/GB would make him a decent LR if his pitches were about 10-15 points higher.

Agreed...better pitches makes him a ML pitcher.

Thanks for the read

Or better splits/control with the same pitches.  Point being when all 3 are sub-70, it's tough to have him succeed in the majors.

Roberts last 2 pitches are bad enough to make him a really bad pitcher.  At best he would be #25 and be a mopup.  Guaranteed he is going to give up a whole lot of hits.  And Stanleys last 2 pitches being in the 30s makes him a total bum.  Even if his splits were 99 his last 4 pitches are so bad he would never be good enough.

I wouldn't go that far.  If his splits were 80/80, he's be about what Charlie Woolf is (see MikeT23's post).

Do these guys have a chance to be solid starters?
I would look at both of them more as LRB types or Mopup.  But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, and it depends on what kind of defense you are sporting as well as your ballpark and how well your offense may be able to compensate.  There are many factors that go into winning as a team, but on an island I wouldn't count on them as starters.
