Ticket #104990: Comp pick slot woes Topic

Background:

In season 17 of the Negro League I had the first pick in the draft ( a treat for taking over an abandoned team). I couldn't sign my second round draft choice and so I was awarded a comp pick for Season 18's draft. However, instead of giving me the second pick of the second round, I was given the third pick. I've copied below my exchange with Customer Support up until now ...

Original Ticket (8/9/2011)

My comp pick in the second round is in the wrong slot - the previous season I had the #1 pick in the second round. He didn't sign and I was correctly awarded a comp pick this season, but it's in the wrong slot. I should have the second pick in the round, for some reason I've got the third.

Customer Support (8/15/2011)

There is another Type D pick in the first round that added a pick. The draft pick is in the correct slot.

My Response

No. You are wrong. I had the 1st pick of the second round last season; I should therefore have the next, i.e. the second, pick of the second round this season, regardless of how many comp picks are in play in the first round.

You are basically describing how the bug works, not how the logic is supposed to work.

As per the "help": "If you are unable to sign your first, second, or third round draft pick you will be awarded a compensation pick in next season's amateur draft. The compensation pick will be at the same position as last season plus one ..."

"The same position" does not refer to cumulative number of players taken, but to the "round/slot". Therefore since last year's round/slot was 2/1, the comp pick should be 2/2 - movement in the first round is totally irrelevant.

If you disagree with me, please check it out and don't just tell me I'm wrong.

The draft is in a couple of days. Please fix this.

Customer Support

The Type D pick in the first round adds one to every pick after it, including your pick and every other pick after it. Just like your Type D pick pushes every pick after it by one slot.

Nothing needs to change and nothing will be changing as the order is correct.

My Response

By your logic, if there are multiple comp picks in the first round and one of them is for not signing the 32nd pick, then the comp pick won't even be in the first round.

In fact, that's exactly what happened to me in the past. My comp pick for the last slot in the first round was originally slotted 3 deep in the second round! Check ticket #98671.

Accordingly, the logic you describe is a bug. In fact it's a known bug. Comp picks are supposed to be awarded immediately after the slot of the unsigned player from the previous season. Since the slot in question is #1, there can be no question where the comp pick slots in. There could be 32 comp picks in the first round and it still wouldn't change the relative position of the slots in the second round.

If you still disagree, PLEASE ESCALATE THIS TO YOUR SUPERIOR.

Customer Support

This is not a bug and I do not understand where the disconnect is with our response. The Type D compensation pick in the first round pushes all picks after it by one. The team that had the 32nd pick in the draft now has the 33rd pick not the first pick in the 2nd round. The draft order is correct and this is the last response you will receive regarding this issue. The compensation pick you have in the second round is correct and we will not be making any adjustments of any kind.

My Response

The draft order for season 18 is:

1. Kansas City
2. Montgomery
3. Nashville
4. Boston

Last year I had the #1 pick for which I was awarded a Type D comp pick. Accordingly, I am entitled to pick in the second slot after Kansas City.

It doesn't freakin' matter that Kansas City's second round slot happens to be 57th overall due to a round 1 comp D pick, seven Type A comps and 16 Type B picks. The 24 extra players picked in the first and supplementary rounds have no bearing on the ORDER of the picks in the second round.

There is absolutely no reason to push me back behind Montgomery in the draft. Again, according to your odd logic, if there were 32 comp Ds in the first round you would push my comp pick all the way to the end of the second round. That's insane.

retarded CS

"every comp picks pushes you back one more slot"  lol

Yeah maybe the actual draft slot but NOT the  DRAFT ORDER. That is what is out of whack.

Hello, my name Peggy.  Draft order correct.  Have a nice day.

The draft will run in a few minutes and Support has simply stopped responding.

The difference between the 58th and 59th picks is not a big deal, but I  find the whole thing rather symbolic of the way HBD has been stagnating of late. I'm seriously considering whether or not I want to continue paying for this product.

To be fair, carnivore, you explained the problem like you were a retard on crack. I didn't get it until the very end of the post.

If you have a good understanding of how comp picks are supposed to work, it seems pretty clear.

Maybe, but I'm not sure why I'd have to explain how it's supposed to work to Customer Support.

What kills me is that this wasn't the first time I'd had a problem with the comp slot. Even though I referenced the previous ticket where they took care of it (although, the first response then was "check help to see how comp picks works") the jerk gave me the old "It must work 'cuz nobody else is complainng" line. If it happened before, and they never fixed it, then it can happen again.

BOTTOM LINE: I would suggest that the next time anyone gets a comp pick that they check to see if it's in the right slot - particularly if someone else has one ahead of them.

BTW, it didn't "hurt" my draft - the guy that was slotted ahead of me grabbed a loser. OTOH, the guy that I took was someone that I bumped up right the draft even though he projected with just barely acceptable control. Unfortunately I didn't notice that I had originally downgraded him because he was a HS prospect where I only had a $10M scouting budget ... As per my $18M advanced scouting budget, he's a dog. I think the pick was just plain cursed.
