Tony's primary position is OF.  So they all have the same defense ratings (A/C-).  I thought WIS only calculated a player's primary position in the salary.  Am I wrong about that?

You are wrong about that,

Thanks contrarian.  So I guess that all of the defense is used in the salary equation.  The number of games at 2B and the A+/A+ is used in the salary equation along with the number of games spent in the OF and the A/C- defense.  Getting warmer?

phillips would be even more of a cookie then he already is if other positions weren't used in salary...

If the other positions, aside from 2B weren't used, wouldn't Phillips be priced out of OL?

It wasn't too long ago, when secondary position defense was ignored in salary... but Phillips (among others) were such great bargains, that WIS changed the formula.  Now, I believe that a player's best defensive rating gets used in the salary formula.

Thanks schwarze...My guess would be that all the defensive positions played (or at least all that have 20 games) are used in the salary formula.  Isn't that why Gary Carter and Howard Johnson are such cookies? Hojo has most of his innings at 3B where he played bad defense but SS is ok (A+/D-).  So you play him at SS and you don't pay as much for the defense as someone who just played SS every game and had an A+/D- rating.  Am I on the right track now?

I am pretty sure salaries are by real-life RC and adjusted by defense and position.  The positional adjustments are, in general, according to their real-life usage.  However, I think certain players (most notably Tony Phillips) were further adjusted towards their best positions.  You are correct, that is why Carter and HoJo are priced so low.  Although I don't think HoJo is much of a bargin.
