Defensive specialist Topic

I have never had one of these on my team because I am an offensive kind of guy but I also can't win so  figure I am going to try new things. That being said is there any use in a defensive specialist, a guard with about 90 ath 85 spd and 95 defense with mediocre bh p and per skills? Do they actually work to shut down other players good guards?

It could, It really depends on your sets. If you run man to man it would be much more beneficial than fcp, however I would make sure that he isn't a total offensive liability, i.e. have something he can do on offense, a la chet frazier from my illini, he could at least make intelligent passing decisions... but couldn't hit a shot anywhere on the court.

well I ended up not going after him and saved the scholarship, but if he reached his potential hewill be around 60 per 60 bh 65 pass

I have had good success with a big who was a defensive specialist - great REB, ATH, DEF and BLK.  Awful low post skills.  He got most of his shots off offensive rebounds but was really good on defense and the boards.

I like to grab guys for down low with LP that will end 50+ higher, but an ATH with 60+.   I try to concentrate on defense, Shot blocking, and rebounding.  I've found that for bigs being very athletic will make them shoot a higher FG% despite the lower LP...this is in D2 mind you.

Good defensive guys are valuable in FCP because of steals...also, with that ATH/SPD  any PER/BH/LP score will yield an average scorer in the uptempo fastbreak world.

Defensive specialists can be valuable in any system, or any kind of non-scoring specialist for that matter. That said, I would want said specialist to bring something else to the table as well-passing, rebounding, etc.
