I advised him during recruiting that he would be a redshirt. He was fine with it. But apparently, I never actually redshirted him. I left him off my depth chart but I noticed that he got in a few games back for 1 minute. Am I screwed? Do I ask for another year of eligibility? if so, when? Should I redshirt him his sophomore year? Thanks for any...   

If he played one minute, you can't redshirt him.  I doubt that WIS will allow an exception for you.

You could redshirt him his sophomore year but there's no guarantee that he'll accept it.

Sorry, what I meant to say was, can he get a fifth year of eligibility? Like a fifth-year senior? I know WIS wouldn't fix it, it's my dumbass mistake. Just forgot to go back and click the "redshirt" button. He never complained either. All season (25 games so far), not one e-mail saying, 'hey coach why no playing time...'.        

not sure what you mean about asking for another year of eligibility.  The only non-redshirt way to get another yr is through injury (I hear - I've never had nor heard of it happening, but its in the rules...) which is applied automatically if conditions are met. Because he played, he played - you may as well put on the depth chart somewhere and get him into some games for experience. Like al said, you can try to redshirt him as a soph, and then you'd get a 5th yr naturally, but the recruiting inform expires with this season, so he may not (likely won't but I have successfully redshirted sophomores) take it. A freshman will never complain about PT unless you've promised him minutes that he's not getting.

there is nothing you can do about FR season at this point

you can try RS as soph, but that is uphill

If you're asking whether the inform of rs button should make it easier to rs after the frosh season, I don't think it does...no personal experience, but we know pormises (start / mins) only matter for frosh seaspn...would make sense to be the same for rs button.
