Having an open mind in the draft center Topic

While some may be aware that I've been on a recent trend of trying to mix in hardly used players when drafting my teams, and during the course of doing this, I've come across some pretty decent players in various price ranges, including guys like 1946 Hank Edwards ($3.8 mil) who will give you average, doubles and triples, 1919 Bobby Veach ($7.0 mil), a high average doubles machine, and 1888 John Reilly ($6.3 mil), a guy who will give you average, power, slugging, stolen bases and HRs, even in minus parks.  Then there's, IMO, the best cheap defensive 2B money can buy in an OL, 1913 Terry Turner.  On a current team of mine, in only 48 games, the guy already has 13 plus plays, only 2 errors, and zero minus plays and is also hitting .260.  I would say that's pretty damn good for a 500+ PA 2B for less than $4 mil.  However, my latest discovery is 1890 Ed Swartwood, an outfielder (C-/B) who normalizes over his RL numbers. He may be a little pricey for some owners' taste at $6.3 mil, but on a current team of mine, halfway through the season at the Polo Grounds, he's hitting .370 with a .446 OBP, 20 doubles and 4 triples.  He's made only 1 error and has 2 plus plays in CF.  Would you believe that prior to my taking a chance on him, he hadn't been used not one time since the last update?  I can't speak for anyone else, but I get a kick out of it when I find  new, or better yet, infrequently used productive players.

yea that does make the game fun too.  I love my 1899 Sam Mertes and out of the 5 seasons he was used I used him 4 times and he produced well and is cheap.  I remember when my old boss who knew I loved baseball gave me this giant baseball encyclopedia with all players stats up until the mid 80's. At the time I was thankfull but I never suspected that I would get into simulation baseball and scroll through the book to find players that no one has used either.  It would be interesting if they came out with a new updated encyclopedia.  Thanks for sharing all your surprise infrequently used players,

I often have a vacant mind in the draft center.  Is that the same thing?

I love this kind of thread.  My favorite part of WIS is discovering new players.  My latest find is Ezra Sutton `87.  These are his stats through 75 games of an OL --

Ezra Sutton '87 (R) SS* 6 92 253 242 3 51 12 .343 .372 .438 3.32M

He also has 9+ plays and no minus plays at SS and, though he does make some errors, his FPCT is a respectable .957.  He has A+ range at SS, 2B and 3B and A range in the OF.  With 462 PA, he's a great bargain at $3.3 MM.  Not quite an OL virgin, but I can't believe he has only one recent use listed in his Performance History.

Another favorite of mine is George Van Haltren `93.   His stats through 75 games in the same OL (playing at Kauffman) --

Van Haltren, George 1893 L 75 278 41 104 5 6 1 49 35 6 3 16 12 .374 .445 .446 .891 6 15

A little pricier at around $5.6 MM, but another great value.  Van Haltren is very similar to your Swartwood but has A range in the OF and he's another high BA/OBP doubles/triples machine and $700K cheaper.  Also only one prior use in the Performance History, which surprises me since I thought I've used him at least twice in the past couple years, maybe three times.

Sutton sounds like a very good bargain.  You already have me running to a draft center to check him out. lol
