A+ to D- rep for probation? Topic

I have the impression that some folks - a handful - are really skilled at using boosters and have used them to do VERY well.  On the other hand, most folks find the risk/reward awful - as do I.....maybe I should experiemnt some more...

Thank you emy, that is very encouraging to hear. I do enjoy this game (even though I still can't figure out how to beat FCP teams but that's an issue for another day...) but it's frustrating to work hard on something and then experience such a major setback due to one mistake. It's doubly frustrating for me because I was really hoping to move up to D1 mostly to get away from Puerto Rico, which is insanely difficult to recruit in (no FSS available and all other recruits are at least 1,500 miles away). I guess I'll just have to chalk it up to experience...

puerto rico - like Hawaii - is a pain, but you can use it to your advantage

1. run a flexible scheme - dont play man defense - run something that will allow you to use almost any recruit of qualifty on the island

2. get your fair share or more of the Island recruits

3.  pick off some guys on the mainland or internationals

4.  expect to have a walkon or two each season, so you have extra $ per slot - filling every slot is less important on the Islands...

good luck!  In Crum, I went from Hawaii (for many many seasons) to Rutgers and now to Kansas....one can succeed in island locations

I just got off probation 2 seasons ago at Wayne State (NE) in Wooden.

When I got hit, the team went to D prestige (from B-), but after the season they moved back to C- ... and after one season, back to B- for  team prestige.  After team roll over I expect my reputation will be C+ this time.  Two more seasons and I should be back to A for reputation.

I used it twice, I was investigated both times, and got probation once.  The player didn't come either time.  I went from A+ to F when I was on probation.   I think it's kind of a funny feature, but It doesn't add much to the game, especially since it doesn't cost anything.  I think it would be better if it was a very big hit to your recruiting budget, and you had about a 25% chance of getting caught.  That way if you 'cheated' with a recruit - you'd blow your recruiting budget for everyone else, and also risk missing on the kid, landing on probation, or both.  The way it works now, you can just be out of money and in a recruiting battle and start throwing out booster gifts when you're frustrated.  you can still miss or land on probation but it doesn't affect you that badly, I got my best recruit 'cleanly' with a poor reputation

to those who have been through it...how hard is it recruiting the season after you get put on probation?  Is it a noticeably drastic difference in the quality of players who will consider you because of the probation, or is it only tied to your prestige?

I did not notice much difference and I did not recruit any differently.

I got the guys I went after.

I did have fewer "dropdown/pulldown" guys initially accept my calls.  And a couple of guys, when they did drop down, said initially they were concerned about prestige ... but dropped down because they though they would get playing time.  I don't recall getting those kind of messages when I was not on probation.

So, overall, I did not think it was too bad.  But, you are stuck with that school until you get your reputation back up.

I did get the guy I offered the gift to (he asked for a gift during my initial contact).  He dropped down right after I gave him the gift.  I am not sure I would have gotten him without the gift, and he is pretty good (Richard Calloway).  He was suspended for 3 games as a Freshman (I wasn't using him that much then anyway) and he will be my #1 Guard as a Junior.  It actually may have been worth the probation.  Still, I don't see myself doing it again since it seems you always get caught.

hughsjr, what was the message where he asked for a gift?  I don't think I've seen it, or if I have, I'm not recognizing it.

Reputaion means nothing unless oyu are changing teams and it will go back up really fast 2-3 seasons.  Recruiting on probation is no different then any other season.  The change is prestige.  YOu can still pull down players.  Boosters are better  used in a way that when you go on probation you dont need to recruit anyone.  Or if you dont get caught ;-)

This was in the Assistant Coach evaluation:

"On a side note, he made it very clear to me that he was going to the 'highest bidder'. You'll need to decide how you want to proceed from here chief."

i've never used booster gifts and don't imagine that i ever will - too many horror stories! but does anyone know if certain eval comments relate to a kid's likelihood to accept a booster gift and whether you'd be caught? comments such as "Also, he still rides the bus to school every day. Normally you don't see a star athlete riding the bus - kind of cool if you ask me." and "FYI, this kid is the consumate team player, looks like anything we'd want him to do, he'd do it." and "FYI, we were walking out of the game and he found a $20 bill on the ground. Whereas I would have stuffed it into my pocket and given it up later for a lap dance, he took it to the lost and found." all seem to be personalty indicators relating to integrity...

They need to just take boosters out of the game.  The risk/reward is outrageously skewed, and the only people that ever try it are those like yourself that don't know any better.  So it's really little more than a punishment on the ignorant.
In D1, boosters are a huge part of the reality right now, as they have been almost forever.  In DII, there are still boosters but not nearly as influential nor much of a problem.

In DIII, on the other hand, there aren't even any scholarships in the real world.  No scholarships = no boosters.  Since so many new players in HD start at D3, I don't know why there's even an option for booster gifts.

Here's support for my point:

... you can't offer booster gifts at D3.
