I'd say player 1 even though his speed is lacking he has good ath.

unless player 2 is lined up against an equally unathletic player, i wouldn't even include him in the discussion, despite his A+ iq.

From what I have seen, speed allows players to draw more fouls when matched against a slower defender. I would like to know what purpose speed has in D as well. Is there something concrete?

I think this matters whether we're talking about in interior or perimeter player, no?

 Speed has to matter for interior players to some degree, maybe more at the 4 spot but if you have an interior player with 50 speed playing against another player with 20 speed there has to be some advantage given to the 50 speed guy.

#1, unless he is covering a very fast PG or SG, then I would say #3. Individual matchups do matter in man-to-man, and it's not a bad idea to change starting lineups game-to-game depending on this.
