After just posting about how little actual coaching I do, I thought I would try to make a change with my practice minutes. At a low prestige D1 school I traditionally recruit players with high potential but with lower overall ratings (marginal D1/D2 players to solid Mid Major players).
For my practice planning, am I better off putting more time into my offense and defense? I run motion offense and man defense. I try to recruit players who have high potential for defense, and try to get guys that will be as athletic as possible for their position. I go for high potential at the key skills by position.
I currently devote 20 minutes to motion and 24 minutes to man. My high high potentials usually go to average by beginning of junior year and limited upside during senior year.
Should I lower the off/def minutes and try to get the core stats higher faster or keep the same balance that I have now? For a pretty bad team like mine, is the minute of off or def a better investment than a minute at one of the core skills?
Thanks for the input.
