I was dicking around the other day and it looks like if you're in a lower cap league, the league-wide D is gonna suck.  Is spending a lot on D the way to go now?
I don't know all the particulars but your defense can be either accentuated or deteriorated depending upon your pitcher's year.
Defense is normalized between the {pitcher and hitter} and the fielder.  The calculator is here.

I would say that defense, overall, is less important than pitching, and offense, in that order. in OLs, there really are many different strategies that can work, and I would not be surprised if an A++ team did well. But there are usually not any exceptionally good fielders among the league leaders in the OLs I have been in recently.

If you ever take the time to check, you'll find that most all-range (A+++) teams in OLs are middle of the pack teams. Not all, because there's exceptions to every rule.  But the vast majority of them lack the good pitching that it takes to win in the playoffs, if they make the playoffs.  If you have good hitting and pitching, you can win a WS with
D- range guys.

You can pay for range or fielding, but probably not both, and be sucessfull in OLs.  I know D- range guys are popular in OLs, but in almost every case, owners are better served by pating a bit more to get at least D range at the corners, C range in the MIF and B range in CF.  Of course, that all depends on pitching and parks too.
