Running a motion/press Topic

What team average ath/speed/stamina should I look for in a team running motion and press?

My fairfield team will have a group of very athletic guards, and rebounding will be mediocre even after the bigs have a couple seasons to develop. So I was thinking about switching to a press to sell out on rebounding and use my guards to create turnovers, etc. I'm not sure though that the team will have the speed or stamina required. Am I correct in thinking that speed is slightly more important than ath in a press?

Do I need just about everyone to have 90+ stamina to run a press with a motion offense?

i'd personally stick with the man to man, especially if you have reservations about speed and stamina.  if you have the high athleticism potential that you've mentioned i think it will help your rebounding situation.  should also allow you to keep your better players on the court a little more often and provides you the ability to play a minus defense and potentially take advantage of double teams against teams with only 1 or 2 perimeter options, which would also aid your rebounding situation.

that all makes sense. Out of curiosity though, if I ever wanted to run a press(without the FB offense), What kind of ath/spd/stamina should I be looking for?

im not the best person to give you advice on the press at D1.  i took over a press team and immediately changed it to man...but i'd say at a minimum definitely 80+ stamina, 65-70ath, 60-65 spd, and 65-70 def

yeah I shoot for 70 ath and def(don't necessarily get it) regardless. 60 speed would be tough though, I would think.

Let's schedule a game in Phelan for next season, by the way.

60 speed is tough, but i've had teams in the high 50s playing man so i'm sure it can be done.  i just think that would be a minimum to shoot for, just to try and eliminate the likelihood of those games where everyone fouls out and you lose to an inferior team/sim (which was my frustration and the reason I switched to man after 1 season when I took over Valpo).

The other thing that I don't like about press at the level you and I are at in D1 is that it almost forces you to take and play 12 guys or at the very least 11 if you have great stamina.  That makes recruiting a challenge because you're stuck trying to fill your roster every season which makes it hard to take a risk on a better player.  When I'm in man or zone I can play 10 guys and essentially use that extra 30k each season to try and offset some of the budget difference between a Big 6 school and my team and maybe take a chance going after a bigger fish.

I don't think this is true.  You need a core group of 10 players with STA
that average 82ish.  Players 11 and 12 can have lower STA because your 5th guard and big will only play about 9-11 minutes.

This is if you run up tempo, if you run "normal" you'll need less.

I look for

80/80 in Guards

80/60 in SF

80/45 in Bigs

Stamina doesn't matter by position, I like to have guys in the 80's but see my post above for #'s.

If you want to play press with ten guys at mid major level more power to you. youd have a much better team if you were doing it with a man or zone defense

How do you guys feel about the zone? I really want to run the zone, it just seems to have so many advantages...

Only real advantage is stamina for a zone. It hurts your rebounding and doesn't allow you to match up a strong defender on a specific opposing player.

If I have great rebounding and defenders in my zone wouldn't it counteract those weaknesses?

zone does allow you to flip 2-3 for 3-2 as situations call for though, which can be an advantage.

Yea and honestly since I've run the zone in Tark the only time I haven't out rebounded my opponent was when I ran the 3-2 which is understandable. You can also doubleteam a player as well so if think I you have the right personnel the zone is very deadly as stamina is one of the most important aspects of this game. zone at the least has to be the most versatile D in the game.

ive had very good success with the zone at both D2 and D1
