CF options? What do you think? Topic

RalphHammonds is my CF.  He's just OK.  Plays OK defense and is a model of consistency at the bat.  I can figure on about a .700 OPS and a .380 slg%.  He costs me about $5.3M a year and I have Team Option for him next year.

I'm pretty sure I'll take advantage of the option and let him go.  I can play SammyGuerrero at CF.  He hits lefties well, righties just OK.  I have a bit of concern about his 79 range and 78 glove in CF.  What do you think?  Will he be fine?

I could back him up with EdSutton, who  just picked up off of waivers (and he got injured in his first AAA game with me).  I would keep him in AAA for 20 games to begin the season.

What do you think?  Hammonds of the Guerrero/Sutton combo?

Also.....my RF is MaxEckstein .  He plays every day, hits 30+ HR's, has a decent glove, and OPS's about .770 in his two seasons with me (but about .800 in the 3 seasons before I got him).  He'll be in his 3rd arb year and should want about $8M per year.  Would you sign him for that?  I don't really have another logical in-house guy, but could use WillLee and his lousy glove in the OF.  He mashes as a 1B platoon guy vs. lefties, but hasn't done much against righties (only # of 34 vR).

By not signing Hammonds or Eckstein I could use about $13M to find a top-of-the-rotation starter and have some left over...probably could find a decent OF guy late in the process.

Eckstein is nice, but I'd let him and Hammonds walk. Get that top of rotation starter, and then get a serviceable OF until Sutton is ready (Sutton, being only 22, should turn out pretty well).

Guerrero could work, I guess, but not longterm.

Let both the vets go.  One of the most important lessons to learn in this game is to not pay guys like Hammonds (who are just OK) that kind of money.  Eckstein can play but wants somewhat too much.  Guerrero's going to work out fine, although you'd eventually rather play him at 2B if you can find a better option at CF.  I don't mind Lee as half a platoon in RF but you want to find a veteran partner who can field the position and hit RHP a little, and you should save about $3M for him.

hbd is like the NBA , i would rather have  a couple of the best players in the world than 4 or 5  ok players that you are paying too much for, go for the front line SP  and fill in  you can find pretty comparable guys for virtually nothing

I'd let Hammonds walk and would have no qualms about playing Guerrero in CF, esp because he is making league min. His def (IMO) will be just fine.

Eckstein is a nice player, but I don't think I'd ink him LT for the money he is going to want. I'd either trade him, or, sometimes if my team is in a good spot financially, and I'm not stressed for payroll the coming season, I've arbed him in his last arb elg year and just taken the comp picks the following season when he walks if you're not able to trade him. Although, if you can use that $7-8M that it will take to keep around for that last year somewhere else, I know thats hard to do.
