My Coors Field team season just completed Topic

Many of you have emailed me asking about how to have fun with a Coors Field team and win so I just wanted to give you an update on my last one.

This time I tried something a little different since although I usually get into the playoffs they tend to not do as well in the playoffs.   I tried the old technique of drafting a low inning very low WHIP pitcher into the team for the purposes of stealing a few games in the playoffs ala Elton Chamberlein or Bob Milaki.  But because I went with a little Pittsburgh Pirates spin I took 1990 Randy Tomlin with his 0.97 WHIP#.   It didn't turn out as well as I hoped, he only went 5-4 with well over a 5.00 ERA for me in the regular season.  When a team scores over 1400 runs like mine did I expected like a 9-2 or 10-3 type record from him.  Spending that much money on a pitcher that only gave me a +1 win differential I think hurt me overall and I ended up with a 89-73 record, not enough to get into the playoffs. Now other things went wrong for me, but you have to exect things to go wrong and things to go well.  This is the one major thing I changed in my strategy and this is the first time in 4-5 CF teams that went under 90 wins. I think I will try the low inning trick one more time though but with someone with a little better performance history, like '38 Dizzy Dean or '87 Pascual Perez.

The team:
Lineup
1B '51 Ralph Kiner
2B '29 George Grantham

3B-2B '79 Bill Madlock

Pitching
Rotation
'22 Babe Adams
''74 Dock Ellis
'35 Red Lucas
'39 Joe Bowman
'58 Don Newcombe
Spot Starter
'90 Randy Tomlin
Bullpen
SA '90 Phenoninal Smith
SA '08 Harley Young
RH '09 Charlie Smith
LH '14 Herb Kelly
C   '24 Babe Adams

'61 Tom Cheney

As usual I use both AAA pitchers all the time, one for long relief and the other for mopup.  I also find out which are my best AAA hitters off the bench and use them.  WIth so many runs scored and getting 6 PA per player almost every game I used AAA much more than normal just to keep them healthy, getting like 900 PA from AAA.

seels, I thank you for sharing your experiences. I have never tried a Coors team, but if I did, I think I would draft differently. How about guys like 1943 Rudy York at 1b, and OFers whose HR/100AB# average up, like Cravath or 1918 and/or 1922 Ruth? And I think I would go with OBP guys at the other positions. I think i wouldn't try too hard to outthink myself on the pitching. It seems you drafted pitchers partly for their hitting. I think I'd just accept the cookies, Joss et al. I realize this is criticism, but I am more asking you than trying to tell you. Do you think I am on the right track?

I think HRs are overvalued at Coors...just get guys who can rake.  And I would assume that BB's would actually hurt a coors team a little bit

You are exactly right bottomlee, in both points.

I noticed that you still want that .400 OBA# but you want to get there with like a .330 BA# than a .280 and a bunch of walks. The only person who didn't fit that mold in my team was Grantham but I took him becasue he filled the stat line with 2B, 3B, and even a few HRs.

You should have HR hitters on your team, but it doesn't have to be crazy.  You can utilize the +3 on 1B, 2B, and 3B as well.  This team hit a very good 206 HRs in the season, but also hit an insane 375 2Bs as well.
