Zen and the art of box score interpretation Topic

Hi community.

I want to preface this thread with the disclaimer that I am not whining or looking to say something is wrong with the game or any of that. I am looking for help improving as a coach.

I recently played a (very good) W Florida team in the CT semis. They beat me by 25 and went on to win the CT. I beat them twice in the regular season. I've gone over the box score a couple times, and frankly I don't know for certain what to look for. I'm trying to examine things to see if this was just one of those RNG fluky things, or if my team is lacking in some area that my opponent exploited, and if so, how do I try to augment that area of weakness. Anyone who is skilled at interpreting these kinds of things who cares to take the time to take a look and give me some feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

They're certainly the better team. I think the more shocking fact is that you beat them twice in the regular season. That was a good coaching job by you, but their abundance of talent prevailed in the CT.

Are they that much better? We have similar experience, my team has a higher average of ath, spd, def, lp, only 1 pt less in per;  he is a much better pas and bh team with more stamina. I thought maybe the stamina was the issue, but pbp didn't show a lot of issues with my guys getting tired (my center occassionally, but I didn't think that was enough to justify the 25 points). Thanks for your input.

i only checked the starting lineup, he does have you beat. his sg and pg have yours pretty handily beat, that is definitely significant.

anyway, from the box score, it looks to me like the teams were pretty fairly matched - on almost all metrics, it was a close game. in fact, your team took more shots and more FT shots - which means they outplayed the other team, by a significant measure - most of the randomizations and stuff occur before the shots are taken, i think what happens on the shot itself is a smaller (albeit heavily weighted) piece of the puzzle. i think the RNG just bit you on the shots themselves, which are a fairly small sample size. i mean, really their guards crushed yours scoring wise, which is not that unexpected, given the ratings. and otherwise, it was pretty even. seems like a reasonable outcome to me.

I don't think they're that much better.  Your team just didn't shoot well in the 2nd half.  You went over 10 minutes without scoring a point.  That's the longest scoring drought I've ever seen.  Chalk it up to the RNG.

btw this stuff is totally meaningless. looking at avg ratings is like sucking a man's dick to tell how good his wife is in bed. there are a lot better ways, both more effective and more enjoyable, to find that out :)

that's a colorful analogy :)
Thanks for the input guys
