I think their should be preaseason tournaments they would be optional but would take up 4 non conference games and it their would be 4 tournaments and 16 teams in each. The best teams would get invitations first.

I used to run 8-team tournaments in two worlds.  One was 'King of the Bluegrass' and hosted by Kentucky St. The other was 'Silver Stake Invitational' hosted by Transylvania. The first two rounds were played in exhibition with the winners meeting on the 2nd day and the losers playing likewise. This gives you two bracket winners. .

Then, in regular season play, you faced each of the 4 teams in the opposite bracket. Whenever the two bracket winners meet, that's the championship game. The other placements are based on the overall tournament record.

You just have to stress to the coaches: Do NOT schedule your 2nd exhibition game. We need it for the 2nd round of the tournament

Come up with your own. We have one in D2 Iba called the Yarnell Invitational (check the Iba board). It's a 6-team round-robin that lasts 5 cycles invitation-only based on alblack's dynasty ratings with two exceptions... tournament winner earns the right to come back next season and my team is the host team.

I've seen conference show-downs too... kinda like the Big East / SEC challenge... where everyone in the conference sets aside one cycle and all 12 teams play each other.

The key is whoever puts this together has to start early... as in before recruiting... or planning falls apart as everyone is anxious to set their schedules.

I am already starting that next year with a Wisconsion conference vs. Ohio Athletic conference and I got 6 games sceduled for the thing. An example is ACC/Big 10 challenge. I created a fourm on it on the Nasimith fourm.
