Circle City Squares - team thread Topic

This is a thread tracking the draft and play of my squad in Tucker T's MIDWEST MAYHEM IV, the Circle City Squares (AKA the Circle City Circle-Jerks, the Indianapolis Busted Headlights, or The Indianapolis At Least We Are Not Daytons). As this league uses the draft utility, I will have invested more time and effort in assembling my squad and thus they will be more dear to my heart. So let's commemorate.

12 rounds are in the books. It only took me three rounds to figure out exactly what I wanted to do:

1) Get a staff that doesn't give up home runs.
2) Choose a park that depresses home runs.
3) Build a bad-*** defense.
4) Draft as many doubles and triples as humanly possible.

Surprisingly there was an early run on power hitters, and not necessarily the five tool kind. The big, slow, musclebound neanderthal-type. Having already drafted Ty Cobb and Dolf Luque in rounds 1 and 2, I decided to run in the opposite direction as most other managers. Let's dare those muscly men to try and hit home runs off of me.

Random Thoughts on My Team:

*I really like this team, but after seeing other owners' salaries, I feel less so. Of course I have no way of knowing yet how many IP or PA they drafted. So, for example, my pitching staff has only $51 million in salary, but that's with 1450 IP. Especially with the pitching, I stressed quality over quantity with this team.

*For a team that will hit ungodly amounts of doubles and triples, we will be somewhat stationary on the basepaths. Of all my regulars, Cobb and Bradley will be the only major base-stealing threats. Lopes should provide some much-needed speed off the bench.

*In each round, I always went for the best hitter available, regardless of his batting stance. While this means I have the best possible players, it also means that I set myself up poorly in platoon situations. I do have a lefty backing up Bubbles Hargrave and Gene Woodling will spell Bradley, a switch-hitter, and Felsch, a righty, but my DH depth chart has lefties in the 1-3 spots and I am backing up Rolen with another righty. I'm not a big advocate for the importance of platoon advantages, but we'll see how this works out.

*What's the over/under on home runs allowed by my team? If we pitch 1500 innings (a conservative estimate), then my raw HR/9 means I would allow 13 all season. But we are playing in what amounts to roughly a $120-130M league, which could inflate that some. However, we will also be playing in a cavern of a ballpark. I'll set it at 20 and cautiously pick the under.
