I know the recommended range for a catcher is 10.  But how much does it matter? Has anyone regularly used a catcher with very low range, like 2-4?  I have a catching prospect but just recently noticed his range is very low.  I'm wondering if he's more likely to have passed balls, more - plays for bunts, etc.  Thanks.

Passed balls.

OK. To the point where you'd be hesitant to use him?

As with most things HBD, it's all relative.  If my C is giving me .300 with 32 homers, I don't care how many passed balls he has.   If he's .250/12, he better catch the damn ball.

I had this wicked awesome hitting C whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx for the 3 full seasons I had him he gave up an average of 20 PBs!!! but he also averaged high 30s HRs, and over 100 rbis, and just about .300 BA.  So I was ok with his 20 PBs.  ( he has a 1 range!)  I think he must have used a walker for getting around?

Most C are going to have 6-10 per season.  15-20 isn't instant death if his hitting carries him.  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Philip Brandt has 1 every 11 games on his career(4 range).    He also carries a career OPS of .863 in Charleston.   I can deal with his 10 passed balls.

Sounds good guys.  Thanks.

After taking a look at passed balls records in my leagues, it looks like glove actually has the biggest impact on passed balls. Poor range seems to lead to a few more errors per season (still under 10 total) and a couple of minus plays, so it doesn't appear to be very impactful. So my only use for weak hiiting, top level defense catchers is as defensive replacements off the bench to rest my slugging catchers.

Catchers range is like tv guide on your wedding night.
