How much value does defense rating play into a full court press?

Quite a bit.

Thanks.

most coaches seem to think it helps limit fouls, a potential weakness of the press.  I imagine it helps with steals too.  usually I look for Ath, Speed, Def for press.  But when you get down to it, you need all of those for any defense.  Press probably just adds the extra element of needing that at every position and 2 deep.

I think press needs defense the most of any of them.  Guys won't see the other side of 20 minutes very often unless they have 40 and up def.

If defense impacts steals the impact is extremely marginal.  The only rating that seems to impact steals significantly is speed.  However, defense does play a major role in controlling how many fouls you commit.  And just because you're pressing doesn't mean you suddenly ignore the impact of the defense rating on the FG% you allow.  Obviously you're trying to force turnovers, but at the end of the day unless you're playing the worst sims in the world your opponents are still going to get a shot off more often than not, and the #1 job of the defense is to make that shot as bad as possible or, better yet, come up with a block.

There are some things in the thread that are flat incorrect, so I'm going to speak up.

ATH/SPD are more important than DEF.

DEF is MOST important in m2m defense, much moreso than in press.

That said, don't completely ignore it, it still matters.

I completely disagree with your analysis grantduck.  I think that the perception that DEF is much more important in any one defense than another is far off base.  A lot of coaches wind up ignoring defensive efficiency for press teams, which is a huge mistake for obvious reasons.  Do I value speed more highly in the press than in man or zone?  Yes.  But defense is still crucial in any system.

With the press, Ath, Speed, Defense and Stamina are very important. I think having a good passing team is an added bonus as well, because if you create a turnover, it's nice if they can pass to the open man. In my opinion, defense is VERY important.

So if I have a defender with a high defensive rating he should be set with more  aggressive fouls and vice-versa?

I recruit in this order for press - ATH, SPD, STA, and then DEF. I find that DEF definitely matters a good bit, but you can get by with a few guys w/ mediocre D ratings.

Personally, I'm not sure why you wouldn't set EVERYONE to 'More aggressive "  You can say you want the guyu there at the end of a game, but its just as important to have a lead to begin with at the end of the game.  And the main goal would seem to be to maximize the total minutes a guy spends on the floor - which is not accomplished by sitting him on the bench for long stretches.
