Fatigue: the strange case of Christy Mathewson '09 Topic

I have Christy Mathewson 1909 in a 4-man rotation. He has been at or below 95% for at least three rotation cycles now and I have even had to put in irregular starters not because the team or staff overall needed rest but because only he did.

After his last start, last game, he is now at 71%

His real life stats: 292 IP, and 7.44 IP/G in 37 actual games pitched. Now, at 292 + 10% times 15 pitches/IP I come up with 4815 pitches he should be available for.

His SIM season stats: 23 games, 2483 pitches over 175 IP. Just over half the pitches he should have available in just over half the 41 games I projected that in a 4-man rotation he should pitch in. Which, with the 10% boost from the SIM, means he is right on track, or should be. Yet he is constantly fatigued.

Again, his pitch count should come to 117/G so I had him set initially for TPC 115 and MPC 120, which I have lowered twice over the past two rotations and is now at 100 and 105 right before his last start.

Still fatigued. What am I missing?

This is a pitcher that should be available for a 3-man without that much stress, why in a 4-man should he be tired at all ?

'09 Mathewson has been prob;ematic for me the same way. I do not have an answer for you. There are several pitchers of his era who have less total innings who are much more usable than he is.

Thanks both of you. This is the Addie Joss 1908 pitch count issue if I remember correctly too, no? Had I figured Mathewson for say 12 P/IP instead, he should have been closer to 100 max all season, maybe lower.

Elbirdo's pitch count formula gives Mathewson about 4260 pitches for a season, or roughly 105 pitches per start in a 4-man rotation.

I have Christy at 4057 or 100 ppg.  (13.9 pitches per real life inning pitched).  He's throwing 108 pitches per game.  He needs to average 98 pitches per game the rest of the way to get back on track.

He had very low strikeouts and walks per inning pitched.  That accounts for the 13.9 value.  Koufax, on the other hand had lots of strikeouts.  He gets about 16.3 pitches for every real life inning pitched.

Thank yo elbirdo. I have Mathewson set on 100 MPC for now, with 95 as the TPC. The bullpen is pretty good, not quite as deep as I might have tried to make it had I realized this dilemma back when drafting (I relied too much on mere IPs and IP/G).

But now I know. I appreciate the help of experts. I listen.

This also explains why on the teams I have Koufax (one is the same team as Mathewson with the fatigue issues) I don't have the same problems with him. Now I understand and have another level to think on when selecting pitchers. mille grazie

You're welcome.

You can do this yourself...

Early in the season when you mouse over the fatigue for a pitcher you sometimes get a message like:

"On pace for 22% more pitches than actual pitches/162 total."

So if you take the number of pitches this pitcher has made and divide by the number of games your team has played then multiply by 162 (one full season), you'll get the number of pitches he is on pace for. That number is 22% more than what the sim has allocated for him. In this case the pitcher is Kuo and he has thrown 15 pitches and my team has played 2 games. So 15 divided by 2 times 162 = 1215. 1215 is 22% more than what sim allocates. 1215 / 1.22 = 995.9. So sim says they allocate about 996 pitches for Kuo for an entire season. I believe the formula gives 996.3.

Good luck.

Thank you. I have been reading your other posts on pitch allocation here in the forums and I understand the formula. I just applied it to Mathewson and his bullpen mates on two teams, one of which could be in contention but has fatigue issues. Using this formula I calculated that I needed to have other pitchers outside the rotation start 5games  between now and the rest of the season (I am going with 3 straight immediately).  I put Mathewson's pitch count a little lower than I had it.

I could have just reduced him to 90 pitches to make up for the difference, but having Mathewson (on one team his ERA after over 90 games is just over 2.00)  and only being able to have him go 6 innings wasn't my preferred solution. But the formulate helped me calculate how many starts I needed to save him (and while I am at it the other starters).

Brilliant work, of service to us all. We should suggest to WIS that they consider some way of recognizing those "citizens" here who help the overall good by their generosity with sharing knowledge like you have and some others do so the rest of us can upgrade our game in the interests of better overall competition.
