5th Overall Pick Question Topic

My real opinion (for what it's worth), from my 2 seasons worth of experience is that the hardest players to get are a shortstop that can field his position AND hit, and ace quality starting pitchers.  I'd take the SS, though I'd be worried about the glove and arm accuracy meeting the projections.  Also, I don't think he'll ever play 162 games at a healthy effectiveness.

Of course, I am just a newb, so feel free to ignore.

I'm leaning towards the SS since that's the general sentiment. My only argument for the RP would be that he would be able to throw 50 pitches and with 90 durability, he'd be able to do it every night. It would be like having a one man bullpen.

Also take into consideration the scouting budgets of the four teams ahead of you.
There are 3 teams ahead of me, I hold the #1 overall pick. Signability for these 2 is not an issue since they will both sign for slot money (it's a Comp D pick).

A one man, average bullpen. His splits aren't top 5 caliber, but when is your next pick?

Even if he does is to reach those projections, 64 vsL, 73 vs R and a 2nd pitch of 73... that's a setup B type pitcher.  You should be able to get him in rounds 3 or 4.

Top of the 3rd round, which means I'll be lucky to get a SS with one arm. The dropoff in HBD is ridiculous.

Unless you know the owner and you're joking with him, pls. don't say something as dumb as that. In no sense would those numbers be an automatic Setup B and only in a world with 31 dead people would you get him in round 4. Sheesh.

So then please tell me where a pitcher with those ratings should be used

that pitcher is a long reliever for sure since he's such a horse.  he's probably late 1st round material, although the specific slot where he should go will obviously vary from draft to draft.

personally, i would be very surprised if he's among the best possible options at the #5 pick.  the SS looks pretty good but you may be overlooking somebody better than both.  it's not very difficult to acquire better RP's than that; i value a quality RP way more than the average bro and there's no way in hell that guy is on my radar at #5 overall.

So then this guy is late 1st round material ; Guy 1: RP   18 YO.

Current 58 OVER. 73 DUR, 89 HLTH, 67 PATIENC, 37 TEMPER, 91 Make Up. 34 STAMINA, 61 CNTRL, 44 vL 48 vR, 67 VLCT, 73 GRNDBL, 77 1st P, 59 2nd P

Projected 86 OVER. 90 DUR, 98 HLTH, 100 PATIENC, 33 TEMPER, 100 Make Up. 47 STAMINA, 84 CNTRL, 64 vL 72 vR, 83 VLCT, 89 GRNDBL, 97 1st P, 73 2nd P

Then this guy that was questioned on why he's not very good ;  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Bob Cardona

They're very, very similar, just with the splits switched around.  Im confused.  How is one 1st round material and one nothing special?

5/2/2012 1:45 PM
are all late 1st rounders special?
5/2/2012 1:51 PM
also switching the splits is not insignificant
5/2/2012 1:54 PM
You do realize that that comparable player was drafted in the first round?
