Great interview, elbirdo, including this gem which should be shared with all newbies:

I never quite understood the call bullpen setting. It's my understanding that every pitch is an independent event and the outcome is based on the pitcher's statistics and the batter's statistics modified only by fatigue. In other words, a pitcher doesn't have a bad day. A '95 Maddux always pitches like a '95 Maddux - no good days or bad days. So if he gives up a handful of runs, it's not because he's off his game, it's just statistics and his next pitch will be a '95 Maddux pitch, his next inning, a '95 Maddux inning. So, I don't want him coming out until he throws the number of pitches I want him to.

Hey, thanks!

1995 Greg Maddux hasn't been pitching like 1995 Maddux lately!

I don't think the point of call bullpen settings is to deal with a "good day" or a "bad day," and I'll rarely set them higher than 2 or MAYBE 3 for a starter.  But they really come into play in the bullpen.  If I have a bullpen guy with around 1.5-2 IP/g set to 15/20 PC and he's thrown 10 pitches and put guys on 2nd and 3rd while recording one out, I'm not concerned about whether he's hot or cold.  I just might want a guy who's current fatigue's not already down into the high 80s or low 90s pitching to the next batter.  Particularly if the first guy was a setup B.  I base my call bullpen settings in the bullpen on whether I'd prefer the guy pitching or the next guy in the 'pen in a situation basically similar to this one.  If it's Gagne, the next guy still probably isn't better after 15 pitches, so I'll put the setting at 1.  But if it's 2006 Greg Maddux, I might have a stronger option available to come in and try to minimize the damage.  It's not like I'd bring in a different 2006 Maddux at that point.  But I might bring in my Joey Devine.

More simply, you're not pulling them out because they're having a bad game.  You're pulling them out because you're still trying to win the game and you're in a situation where another pitcher might be better able to keep that possibility alive.

What I would actually prefer, given your point about how the game works, is if the pull logic paid little or no attention to what I would consider "prior results."  In other words, if it's the 6th inning of a 1-run game and there's 1 out and 2 on, I'd probably like my pull settings to bring '95 Maddux out of the game if he's thrown 87 pitches and his pitch counts are 95/110 or something like that (obviously that depends to some extent on how good, deep, and fresh my bullpen is, but I can at least theoretically have taken those things into account when I assigned the pull setting).  At this point I (and the game engine) couldn't care less if the score is 1-0 or 8-7, but the current pull settings certainly seem to treat these two scenarios very differently.  If my Maddux has a shutout going but that many pitches it's not like any CG shutout logic should apply, and frankly, as far as the end result of the game is concerned, those two scenario are identical.  But the pull settings definitely treat 7-run Maddux differently than they treat 0-run Maddux even though, as you mentioned, he's the exact same set of numbers as far as the engine calculating PA results is concerned.

Yeah, but do you want your '95 Maddux (or other ace) to still throw pitches when you are up 8-1 or down 1-8 and the game is essentially out of reach?  Don't get me wrong, in most cases I do use a 1 pull setting, but there are advantages to going higher, especially in low to mid caps where your pitchers are more differentiated.

I hope elbirdo finally decides to pit his skill against the best, in this year's WIS Championship.

"Yeah, but do you want your '95 Maddux (or other ace) to still throw pitches when you are up 8-1..."

Pull setting doesn't come into play if you're ahead; it's a measure of how patient Sparky is in letting the pitcher work out of a jam.

Can't you use a mop up in this case ?

Mop-up can be used when you're way ahead; I personally don't like using a mop-up because I've had too many games lost because the M-U was brought in and ended up losing the game.  Sometimes I'll have one on the roster but make sure he's set to rest against good teams.

Who would that be ?
There are a number of high-quality owners who participate in the WIS Championship... The past champions include, ballantine (2004), ronthegenius (2005), ArlenWilliam (2006), JohnGPF (2007), jfranco77 (2008), wildthings1 (2009), rbow923 (2010) and brianjw (2011).

Last year, the 96 participating owners have a combined 4.4 million sim games played, 11,800 playoff appearances, and 1,970 Championships - that's an average of over 20 per person.
