Underperformance Topic

I was disappointed with my Rochester team's performance this season.  I was hoping for a F4 type season, figured going in we should have a very solid shot at a top 2 seed and an E8 appearance at least...  This really had to be my year, as the seniors I'm losing are going to push me back a big step for next year.  Coury's replacements are adequate, Jones I can certainly live without, but I'm losing my one post player who was good enough to keep me competitive with the big boys.  Obviously the post was where my big problems were.  I only had 1 good starter and no really solid backups.  But I thought my guard strength would have largely covered for this, or at least that was my hope.  Looking at the schedule I would have anticipated that my team should have won against St. John Fisher, Cal Tech, Rensselaer, and at least 1 if not 2 of the matchups with Chicago, as well as the Austin game that knocked me out in the 2nd round of the tournament.  Obviously the RNG can throw you a curve, but that's a lot of curves.  So what do you guys think?  Did the team underperform?  Did I coach them wrong and ruin the season for myself?  Or was the lack of post depth and lesser defense (as compared to some of the other good teams I've had in the past) holding me back, and really the problem was with my expectations rather than the outcome?

Not 1 better, more experienced coach can comment on this?

I'm not necessarily better or more experienced....but at first glance, I definitely agree that your team underperformed this season. Rochester reminds me a bit of my Macalester team this season. I have final four expectations as well, but seeing this performance makes me nervous. ;)

I looked through the game against Austin, and one big thing stood out to me. Hallum shot way too much. I know you ran into a double team, but he was also matched up against a very good defensive player (79 DEF, 59 ATH) that naturally would have shut him down anyway. Hallum is a good scorer, but you should have either moved him to SG to take advantage of a weak defender (45 DEF, 37 ATH) or decreased his distro big time. His scoring efficiency killed you in that game, especially since you were running slow down. Can't waste shots when playing fewer possessions...

What 3pt setting did you have Coury on? Looks like he might have been set to 0, but I would have moved him to -1 or -2 to take advantage of the mismatch at SG. My gameplan would have included trying to drive to the hoop as much as possible with Coury and pile up the fouls against Tall.

Those are just a few quick thoughts. If I have some more time later, I'll try to look at your other games.
