I can see your point, but I feel you're selling him a little short. His makeup is 99, so he should be a top notch hitter longer than most. He's in his 30's, and has just lost a little power the past few seasons. Year 5 should see some big decline, but he should probably be All-Star caliber through season 4.
Actually he has lost pts in 3 major areas power (3 pts) speed (7 pts) and health (2 pts) all in the past 2 or 3 seasons.  He is going to be only slightly better then average by season 5.  And really by season 3 he would at best be worth 10 mill.  So by my calculation he is nearly being paid double what he should be paid over the lifetime of the contract.  not quite double obv. but still way too much.

Still pretty good researching even if it was for the wrong player....

I agree that it shouldn't be possible to figure out exactly how much budget space everyone has left, but at least in my case (as one of the two other bidders) that wasn't what happened.

I still had a few million left that I could have used to go higher, but once the bidding got to that level, I also came to the conclusion that he was being overpaid.  I figured it was better to transfer money out of my prospect budget so that I could offer a max contract to my #1 choice (who's also being overpaid) than to go higher on my #4 choice.

Its also ridiculous in that, since I believe tiebreakers only come into play in the case of an actual tie, a hypothetical player in this same situation is basically saying "gee, I might put up better numbers in Denver, with a better hitting coach in their offense-friendly stadium...but I think I'll instead finish my career in Portland, since they did give me that extra dollar bill and all."

It's just not realistic in any way. But oh well, it's probably a better thread for the suggestion forum.
Lol, hilarious.  Love the thought process there.  Perhaps tiebreakers should be applied in situations where the offers are within a reasonable total compensation amount.  Like 2-3% or something, or whatever the correct magical number should be.
