2-3, or 3-2, Which to use? Topic

A bit of talk recently on how to ATTACK the zone but how about how to USE the zone?

Lets assume both your guards are awesome incredible defenders as are your power forward and center. I mean, both the perimeter and interior defense is played by guys that enjoy embarrassing you in front of your girlfriend. Really truly good. However, your small forward is a little weak on the defensive end. A small forward that doesn't know where he should be positioned but, if by a miracle happens to be in the correct position, wouldn't know what to do and doesn't have the ability to do it anyways.

Against a team that shoots a lot of long range shots and shoots them at a high % what is the better defense to use? 2-3 or 3-2?

I figure 3-2 because, well, EVERYONE knows it's better to have more guys out there guarding the perimeter and, besides, it's intuitive and fundamental basketball. But a little voice in my head (my meds have run out) whispers "Maybe having 2 studs is better than 2 studs and 1 liability. Especially if the 3 are averaged."

I hate the voices in my head and usually argue with them but in this case I'm wondering if the voice may be correct.

Thoughts? Musings?

I don't know if it's right or not, but typically in a situation like that I would look at the number of guys taking the 3 point shots for the other team.  If they're a great 3-point shooting team because they have a 25 PPG 2 guard or even distributed amongst the 2 guards I'd probably go with the 2-3 zone pushed out if it's 2 shooters, or pulled in if it's 1 but I'd double team the guy.  If they have 3+ guys making a decent number of 3s then I'd definitely go with the 3-2 and take my chances on the SF bringing down the defensive average a bit.  Again, I haven't run any kind of numbers to determine whether or not this strategy is justified, but it usually seems to work pretty well for me.

1. How would you handle it then if they were shooters who are not shooting 3's, but are not scoring in the paint?

2. Secondly how would you handle guards specifically who are slashers and score in the paint often.

Theoretically, I would imagine in the first case you still would play the 3-2 and sink in some, because the opponent is still playing a bit outside, so stacking the paint for a slasher or inside presence would be pointless with a 2-3.

Slashers throw me off in a zone though. I assume you'd stack the paint with a 2-3 still since defense is covered in zones, not m2m. It throws some confusion though because we don't really know shot location for these players, so what if the zone covered by my best defender is opposite to where their best scorer is scoring from. Is that taken into account with WIS?

It's difficult trying to apply RL concepts in a game where we don't know everything that's happening, considering pbp is pretty much cosmetic.
