Also, should I plan on scheduling absolute scrubs when I first start? As in 300+ RPI teams?
If you're not going to make the post-season anyway, then absolutely, if that's what you need to do to get wins. Your first couple seasons, you want to maximize your homecourt advantage rating by going 10-0 in non-conference, so you at least have a fighting chance to get some wins in-conference and incrementally boost your prestige.

eh, not necessarily THAT bad. here is the rule of thumb - any time you need wins bad, schedule teams you are like 95% to beat. there is little value in finding the worst team you can find, who you are 99% or more to beat. so if you can safely win 9 and half the time 10 games, against like 200 rpi teams, no reason to take the hit scheduling 300 rpi teams. but if your team will suck horribly, then yes, 300 rpi teams are the way to go. ive scheduled for wins even with like 30 rpi teams (do it regularly), so i am playing like 100 rpi teams in that case (maybe 150?).

also, keep in mind an opponents rpi has little impact on yours. record is much more important. so try to find bad teams in bad conference, who will actually win some games, but who you are still in that 95% ballpark.

To address a few points:

My definition of successful would be a consistent NT team(not every year) but maybe 3 of 5 years. with another PIT mixed in. An occasional Sweet 16 or Elite 8 type run.

Gillispie I think I already follow your recruiting advice in my low level D1 teams. I built a really good team at Fairfield(in my opinion anyway) and a decent team an UNI by doing that. I guess I'm just not sure how high to aim with a better school in a better conference.

And a better coach got Oregon anyway. I'm trying to decide whether or not to take Fresno State or wait a season. I should make the NT again due to being in such a ****** conference so my prestige shouldn't drop at all.
pick up one of the SEC teams!! assuming u are talking tark. but maybe you aren't, but tark job cycle is now so i just figured...
