position scarcity when considering HOF voting? Topic

I'm curious as to how the other owners evaluate HOF nominees.

Do you take positional scarcity/difficulty into account?

Here's my current example:
I'm in a world which is in its 24th season and has a very small HOF.  Every HOF is different, obviously, but I'm currently arguing on behalf of this guy: Tito Koh, CF.  (He's not even my guy, so I don't really know why I'm arguing so forcefully for him.)

My quick take is that he gave you about all you can ask for from a CF.  He didn't win GGs, but he had the range for the position and racked up 81 + plays to 37 - plays, and was clearly the best offensive CF the world's ever had (615 HRs).  Poor BR IQ, so he only stole about 10 bags a season.  The only real knock against him is a .270 career BA.

For comparison's sake, would you vote in a 1B/COF with very similar #s but a .300 career average and NOT this CF?  Or neither, or both?

I put a lot of emphasis on the difficulty of finding a solid power hitter at the CF/SS spots without playing people out of position.   For others, it's all about the offensive numbers.

We discussed this a bit in MG last season, and it sort of shows what a farce a HoF is when we don't really "know" the universe of players. We know our guys and maybe the guys that get post-season awards, and the big name FAs that got the max contracts (or maybe not if you weren't pursuing them).

Even if you watch all your box scores, you won't be familair with guys in the other league.

As such, I always end up voting for guys with the milestone HR totals or milestone win totals or post-season awards because that gives you some context.

There is no report you can run that can show you how good a 2B or SS was compared to other guys who played the position.

MG has a guy who played most of his career at 2B. Solid defender, but never GG. Career .302 hitter, 2000 hits & 400 HRs. 2 AS, 1 SS, no MVPs. Was he the best 2B ever in our world? I honestly have no idea.

But there are a dozen other hitters with better offensive stats than him (most of them are 1B/DH of course). Do I pass on the guys with the better stats because this guy could play adequate at a skill position? What if he won 10 GGs (so awesome defender) but was only a .280 hitter with 250 HRs?

Better reporting tools would certainly help.  Hell, just expand the record lists to 25 or so.

I believe 'motown is referring to Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jamey Cambridge

Each year, I post JAMEY CAMBRIDGE, *******!!!! and he gets 5 votes.    I'm almost certain, among legit 2B, he was the best 2B in MG.

Nonetheless, every world I'm in looks at HR, Wins, etc, etc and votes those guys.   So you have SP, the occassional 600 save RP, and 1B/DH.

I usually make a halfhearted attempt at using the Keltner list every go-round.

I take position into account, and especially if they played it well defensively. I also try and make guys aware of players that started in season 1, which in theory cut their stat totatls short.

The reason I no longer vote for the HoF is largely  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Alex Azocar who ended his career with 11 Gold Gloves (all in CF), 8 All Star appearances, a Silver Slugger, and a rather pedestrian .759 OPS. Did not make the HoF, despite extensive lobbying, and is no longer eligible.
