To expand on that thought, IF there were more injuries that diminished or killed top picks' careers, more 2nd/3rd/4th rounders would make much more significant contributions.

Easy way to look at it:
1st round - 80 OVR(average for simplicities sake)
2nd round -75
3rd round -70
4th round -65

If 1/3 of those 1st rounders became 65-75 due to injury, 1/3 of the 2-3-4 rounders wll move up the heirarchy.  And so on down the line.  Suddenly, because 10 of the 1st rounders are 2-3-4 quality, the 4th round becomes important..  Even moreso if you factor in that ten 2nd and 3rd rounders will also drop 1-3 rounds in value due to injury.

That said, has anyone ever suggested "MORE INJURIES"?   We have tons of "MORE RANDOMNESS!!!" suggestions but no one, save me, suggests more injuries.

That's a very good point.  And as you say, NO one is ever going to suggest More Injuries.

Having seen both sides of this argument, I'm happy to say that I see that we are getting what we pay for.  If owners demand predictability, then that's fine and they've got it.

I suppose the thing that bothers me is not that tanking is facilitated - tanking works, everywhere, in real life too.  And it's up to the world to police itself in its own ways if it chooses to handle that.  But what the predictability seems to point toward is that there's a very formulaic way to build a team.

Plain and simple, if I see any player with an 80+ OVR rating, I know how he was acquired.  If I see a roster with more than three or four of them, I can be certain that that team has spent many seasons at the bottom of their division.  Whether you say "tanking" or not is up to you.  However, to me, it does indicate that regardless of any intentions, this is the way to build a good team.

HA!  I initially typed "save me and death" and changed it because I couldn't remember if it was you.

I've asked for more injuries. Would probably reward depth over high spending on a few FAs. Drafting & MinL development would play a bigger role.

In the ideal game, injuries would be one of many options that could be set within a world.  A slider from ML Realistic down to No Injuries.

Never going to happen in HBD. But maybe in another MLB simulation.

The biggest difference, with more injuries, would come in the draft.  No, no one will get get MVP-types in the 5th round but, by lowering the number of high-end players(via injury), the 4th-5th rounders would see more playing time.  That would make them valuable.

That addresses what I find most unrealistic about it.  Most people see this argument at the extremes... "you shouldn't be able to find a monster in the 5th round" and "I don't want to put everything into a player at the number 7 pick who busts for his whole career."

To me, the third point is that top players are of such quality that their performance never varies.  Virtually every 1/1 pick goes .340/.450/.650 season in and out, until they start to age.  Would it be that bad if there was some allowance for a guy having a "down season?"  In my world's AL, the past 13 MVP awards have been traded back and forth between TWO players.

BTW, this also points out something else I've been thinking.  Maybe it's just my world... lot of offense... but I've seen far more 1st round pitchers floating from team to team than I have hitters.  As far as I can see, there's NO reason to take a pitcher at the top of the first round.  And it's largely because the cost is too great to pass up one of the solid gold hitters.

Down season:   Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Butch ******* Rose has kept me down all season.  I kept thinking "No way he doesn't start hitting."   Well, I've been wrong.

2nd point:  Varies from world to world.  Cooperstown seems to be more of a "pitcher's" world.    Nonetheless, the reason to take a pitcher in the top of the first round is because pitching is pretty damn important in a short series" and pitchers hold their ratings deep into their careers while hitters fade in their early 30s.

BTW, check all "What's wrong with......?" threads.   You'll find lots of players having "down" seasons.    People love to complain about them but never mention the lifetime back-up with the OPS of .900 out of nowhere.

Likewise, the 99 health "waaaahhhh, he's gone 200 days" vs the 55 health that has lost 8 man days in the past 7 seasons with 4 - 2 day injuries.

Lifetime backup w/ an OPS of .892 (close enough??)  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Calvin Irabu (albeit as a platoon guy)
