The Fordham Rams Topic

I started a tracking thread for Fordham once before, but severely screwed up recruiting, missing 5 of my top 6 targets and scrambing to fill another slot on my team, so I deleted it after a few days...now I think I have a handle on how I have to recruit here, which is unlike the ease by which I've gotten people to Princeton, in Crum. I have a huge budget this year, thanks to the strength of the Ivy League (5 teams in the NT, several of which made it as far as the Sweet 16), and six slots to fill. Other than to say that, ideally, I'd like four freshmen, one redshirt, and one ineligible guy, I'm not going to go into a great amount of detail about my needs. I will show my team and that should probably speak for itself. I'll break down my process after I sign everyone I need.

Carroll was the player that I did intend to recruit my first year at Fordham, Goines was an unwanted recruit that I signed for cheap. Carroll was my least favorite of the guys I was after, but now I'd consider someone of his caliber to be a fine addition to my team.
I will be going after a few guys I imagine will be stars for me, but a larger chunk will be developmental types who have a lot of potential but who won't be much help for a year or two.
I do not expect to be very competetive this year.

I expect to install a halfcourt press this year, but that depends on whom I manage to bring to the team. It also might wait until next year, or possibly simply won't be run this year. I don't see Fordham being able to run uptempo this season, and to me the two go hand-in-hand.
Part of my recruiting struggles my first year here included an ill-advised attempt to use booster gifts. Actually, booster gift, a single throwback jersey to a kid who was begging for handouts. I thought better of it the next cycle, and let the recruit go somewhere else, as I had burned through my legitimate budget before I strongly considered going illegitimate.
After that moment of weakness and desperation, I decided to treat the whole exchange like an experiment on whether there was a de minimus violation for which I'd be caught. The player didn't turn me in, but some fired employee from the athletic department did, and my reputation plunged from an A or A+ to a C. Fordham was put on probation.
Since then, my reputation is now back up to an A-. I have stayed clear of anything that would hurt it further, including allowing any kids to struggle academically, even if they're on their redshirt year. There's another aspect to that, though, since I think it might be counterproductive, unless it would take a ton of practice minutes to get them to an okay point on grades, to allow a redshirting freshman to fall below a 2.0. While it doesn't affect their improvement over the year, I still have to make up for it in following years, as apparently a bad GPA makes a kid dumber.
I even had one, at Princeton, in Crum, who came in with a 3.8 or something and wound up failing one of his semesters while he was redshirting. If I'd dedicated 5 practice minutes to his classwork, I doubt he would have fallen below a 3.5.

While I'm making this thread, and procrastinating from doing something actually useful, I'll post the individual players and give opinions on them, and what I expect...

Jeremy Edelman, 5'10" 171 lbs., 3.6 GPA, our returning point guard, was a big target for me last year. I did have to win a recruiting battle for him, although I don't remember against whom it was. I love his speed, ball handling, passing, and FT shooting. I like his perimeter rating and work ethic, and am satisfied with his athleticism (not that I have any choice). I'm not so happy about his defense, and that's one of the primary reasons I'm considering putting in the press...because it's less important there than it is in man-to-man defense.

Jeremy isn't a defender, he's an offensive playmaker. In the Triangle, I don't think I need a PG to be a scorer, just someone who can handle the press well through speed, ballhandling, and passing. I think, other than in terms of defense, he'll be quite good by the time he's out of here.

If I were starting with a totally blank slate, I'd probably go with a motion/zone-press, as that's my favorite system. I'm not starting with a blank slate, though.

Stacey Duke, 6'0" 179 lbs., 3.2 GPA, our returning shooting guard. I liked the look of him despite his low work ethic, and still do. He's an offensive threat as a shooter, though not yet so much as a playmaker, something I hope to change. His athleticism and speed are outstanding, considering that I got him to myself during recruiting, and his perimeter rating is great, too. All of those I expect to reach 90 by the start of his junior season. I might be a little too optimistic on that front, considering his work ethic...

Duke's fine on defense, too. I vaguely wish he had better talent at rebounding, but beggers can't be choosers, and as I discovered, Fordham is a begger.

David Palmer, 6'6" 204 lbs., carries a 3.4 GPA, was a player I didn't need last year, so I felt good about redshirting him. As a small forward, he doesn't do anything particularly well, except perhaps shooting free throws. His defense is poor, his speed and athleticism adequate, basically everything about him is adequate except his defense. I'm not crazy about him, but I expect him to be a backup, anyways, for his entire time with me. He could develop into a contributor, as he does at least have good potential in every rating other than defense, due to his overall mediocrity.

John Byrd, 6'7" 214 lbs., 3.1 GPA, is a power forward I leaned on fairly heavily last year as a backup to Carroll...I did have a center named Burton Jackson who was a junior when I came in, with a 2.0 GPA, and who had missed his freshman season due to academic ineligibility. I tried to bring Jackson's GPA up to a 2.7 so he'd be able to stick around for another season, but despite his and my best efforts, it only made it up to a 2.4. As a result, I'm realizing now that I might be best served to only take on only five guys this year and/or bring on another PF/C to redshirt. Anyways, Byrd is good, though he really is more of a C in my system than a PF. He's developed well so far and I expect that to continue. His defense is okay but not great.

Gregg Carroll, 6'11" 237 lbs., 2.8 GPA, is exactly the kind of big man I like to depend upon. He's still not a finished product across the board, as for instance I'd like to get his free throw shooting up to an A+, but he rebounds well and scores well from the block. His defense, once again, is no more than adequate...maybe I should just install a zone defense, and forget the investment I've made so far in man...

Nathan Goines, The Accidental Ram (Fordham's mascot), 6'9" 231 lbs., with a 3.6 GPA. Goines was there when I needed him, and vice versa. He's turned out okay. He still needs quite a bit of work on his low post and stamina but all-in-all as a contributor he's been better than I had hoped.

After spending this time sitting here, writing all this out, I've decided that I have to make the switch over to a zone defense. Losing the time spent on the man-to-man will be a bit of a drag, but I needed to practice it for the guys who just graduated, and now I need to do what's best for the program. Considering that nobody's above a B, it really isn't that much of a loss, and while we're learning it we can continue to run the man...though probably not for that long, considering that the zone seems to work okay even when your guys don't know it all that well.
5/6/2007 1:56 PM
recruiting has started, and I am anxious to see how I do. I think I learned what I had to from the last time, and I've got four guys right now that I'm going after, with the money for six scholarships plus a bunch from my conference mates' postseason appearances/success. I've never had a recruiting budget like this, and I think combining that with the fact that I'm not overreaching for quality or quantity, I should be okay. But I am nervous, considering how badly I did two seasons ago during this phase of the year...with about $50,000 less on hand.

So far, I've got two battles against Sims, but they're a lot farther away from my targeted guys than I am, and I don't think either has much of a prestige advantage, if they have one at all. I also don't think that any of my targeted guys will receive attention from the powers that be. Developmental prospects, all of them. No immediate help.
5/7/2007 6:28 PM
those Sims are tougher than they used to be, but it looks like I've got one beat and the other on the ropes. I've got 6 guys interested for my 6 slots but some of them are people nobody will fight me for, so they're likely to come pretty cheap. No other battles yet, but if and when they do happen, I've still got about half of my bankroll , which is a substantial amount of money.
5/8/2007 5:13 AM
Laurence Fanelli, PG, 6'1" 199 lbs., 2.5 GPA...one of the stars of the class. I'm certain that he'll be amazing in a few seasons. He comes in without knowledge of either the zone or the triangle, so it might be a bit of a rough transition, but he'll be starting for me from day one, all the same.

Harold Giles, PG, 5'11" 170 lbs., 2.7 GPA. Giles will be redshirting, basically because after the first few rounds of recruiting I saw that Fanelli wasn't being pursued by anyone else, so I don't need Giles for several years. He will be a little unhappy during his sophomore season unless I figure something out, with the limited PT, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Flex/zone.

Taylor Carey, PF, 6'10" 251 lbs., 2.7 GPA. Carey will be playing off the bench this year, in relief of Carroll. I was crazy about this recruit from the moment I saw him, as I think he'll develop really well, and I don't need him to be particularly skilled right now. I think his low post and rebounding ratings will go up fairly quickly, and his FT shooting is really quite good for a freshman big man, which is where I really like to emphasize the ability. Motion/zone.
