So, I am running the triangle. My point guard is the best player on my DIII team. He was a DII pulldown, and has quality ratings at ath/speed/bh/and pass. I don't want him to shoot the ball, but I want to try and do something to bring his assist numbers up.

Right now I use a player distribution system where my top 6 ballers, who I want to take shots, are at 15 or 16, with everyone else at 1 or 2. My point guard is at 1.

Should I bump his player distribution up in order to get him more touches, and then hope he passes the ball? Or, are his low assist totals a reflection of a sorry supporting cast?

Thanks/JRNY.

What pace are you running your offense at? THat as much as anything will determine assists. And with a decent speed I would actually bump UP his distribution anyway and set his three point shooting to either minus one or two - and let him use his speed to try scoring a little.

A few things:

1) Distribution refers only to percentage of plays designed for a specific player to shoot. However, if he's your PG, assume he's doing a good bit of ball controlling anyway.

2) I would not be overly concerned with an individual player's statistics: I think you'll find that even more than RL, HD is far more of a team-oriented game -- for example, if you look at the top teams, more often than not you'll see extremely balanced scoring across the board, as opposed to RL teams that have 1-4 guys scoring significantly more than the rest.

3) Most importantly, assists are the least important stat in HD. You can artificially raise them by hving your PG never shoot, but at what cost? Find the conbination that results in the best team outcome: if Huffman's shooting 46.7%, don't lower his distro -- he's still passing the ball every time he doesn't shoot, and more passes probably won't result in anyone else shooting any better than that anyway.

Then again, I can never get the triangle to perform the way I want anyway, so maybe I'm the wrong guy to ask...

Low assist totals can reflect the supporting cast. If the guys he's passing to are missing shots or turning it over, then he's not going to get the assists you'd expect.

Good analysis/advice.

Thank-you esteemed vets of the hardwood.

*I run a normal tempo.

I was considering an increase to Huffman's distro (fyi). I might need to experiment some more prior to the conference tourney.
