Trying to figure out the best way to play my guys and also get a better handle in general on defesnive ratings by position, so I come asking help on where to play these 3 guys. I have a very good defensive SS, with a passable bat, these 3, then no one that can really play any of these 3 positions well, or hit well enough to oust one of them.

Here are their defensive ratings

A - 82/88/63/65
B - 79/84/82/79
C - 80/79/78/84

A is the best hitter, 80's down the line. B only has 65 power, but otherwise high 70's or 80's in every hitting rating. C comes in a distant 3rd, with 60's and 70's in his hitting ratings.

Where would you slot these 3 guys among 2B, 3B and CF?

assuming they are all righty A in CF, B at 2b and C at 3b

Id flip B at 3B, and C at 2B, A seems the most Center Fieldery

A is clearly the CF.

B and C are pretty close and arguments could be made for putting either at 3b or 2b. I'd put the slightly better range guy, C at 2b and the better glove guy, B at 3b. (I think B and Cs Arm strength and accuracy ratings cancel each other out)

2B gets more chances than 3B. The difference in range (79 vs 80) is basically a wash, so I'd put the better glove where he'd get more chances.

I'll mostly agree with pb... but part of the reason I'd put C at 2B is that his ratings meet or exceed all def. recs at 2B, whereas B doesn't (range).

Although tec's point re: glove rating is legit, they both exceed the recs at both positions, so I think it's a personal choice.

Thanks guys. I was thinking/slash hoping that A would make the best CF, as there's something exciting about a dynamic power hitting CF, right? :)

A = CF, B = 2B, C = 3B, but...

Is "B" young and does he still have some defensive upside? I had a stud prospect whom I steered away from shortstop because his AA would never be better than 81. He played 2B/3B for his first 5 ML seasons and was an all-star and gold glove 2B in his 4th and 5th seasons. Last season, with an opening at SS and having signed him to a $9.9milx5 contract, I moved him to short with defense of 79/82/91/79. After starting off with 5 errors in his first 10 games, finishing with 25 in 133 SS starts didn't look bad. His +/- was a push at 2/2 and, with a 77 range 90 glove 2B in most games, we led the world in double plays.

I'm wishing I'd made that move a couple of seasons earlier because my player is now 26. He improved to 83 glove in the offseason but is running out of "improvement time".

So, if your current shortstop has 80+ range, you might think of moving him to CF, putting A at 2B, B at SS, C at 3B. You'll get a few more errors at SS, but you'll have a great arm in CF and you'll get a ton of double plays if your pitchers are decent with groundballs. And you have a gold glove at 3B any way you do it.

B at 2B because the better glove (+4) goes to where you have more plays. The 1 range difference will make less of a difference than a better glove one can only assume.
