AAA Player Assignment After Trade Topic

Just completed a trade where one of the returning players is a AAA catcher.

The system will not allow me to assign him there - only to the ML roster. Why would that be?

he is out of options.

He was out of options before though...this is the middle of the season. He's been playing AAA all year

I get caught on this one all the time. Does it work like this in the MLB?
10/15/2009 3:10 PM
Yes, but the trade essentially exposed him and he must now clear waivers to go back to the minors.

It is something that commonly gets missed when trading for a minor leaguer.

Nope.

In order to have started the season in AAA, I believe MLB rules state that he has to have gone through waivers already.... or something.

Sorta like everyone gets DFA'd automatically once they're out of options... I think?

Either way, in MLB you can't keep a guy in the minors, on the 40-man, forever... like we do.

Slightly different question: if you trade for a minor leaguer, will he suffer a demotion penalty if you assign him to a level lower than where he was with his prior organization?

Not normally or even at all after a trade. I suppose there is that possibility but I haven't see it.

You do run the risk of a demotion penalty, but you can never tell for certain whether a player will get hit with one.

You changed the question completely after people started posting? Nice.

I have made a trade for a player and I have assigned him to a lower level many times and I have never suffered a demotion penalty.

I would not advise continuing to do so unless you are a fan of roulette. Besides my own personal experience having a player take a hit, developers have confirmed (point blank) that you take the chance when you assign a player to a lower level.

I'm glad I was able to find this, because I was beginning to question whether I was going insane since everyone else seems to assign people to lower levels without any issue, yet I recall getting hit with the demotion penalty.

From the 7/5/07 dev. chat:

settle a recent debate for us: we know that if you demote a plyer, there's a risk of a demotion penalty depending on various factors (age, makeup, patience, etc.). if you assign a player for whom you just traded, does the same risk apply? i'm not talking about that player being stuck at the new level for a long time, i'm only asking whether assigning a newly-acquired player to a lower level functions the same way as a demotion. thanks. (schedule1 - Hall of Famer - 4:13 PM)

Assigning a player to a lower level can have the same affect as demoting a player.
