I've heard a lot about how prestige is based on a 4 year window.

I am in my 3rd year of coaching D1 Wagner in Crum

So, in the last year of the window, the one I would be losing the team did this: 89 rpi 23-9 record, sweet 16, conf champ, ct champ.

The most recent year I did this with the team: rpi 57, 22-8 NT first round, Conf and Ct champ.

The team had a c- prestigeat the beginning of the year.

Any guesses on a drop, increase, or remain constant? (No peeking)

As far as I know, neither team had anyone drafted, and the conf. prestige has remained the same.

Well, there's a ton of important info being out there ... most important would be what Wagner did in the other three seasons that will now go to determine its prestige. Without that info, it'd be impossible to even venture a guess.

Also, keep in mind that the most recent season carries by far the most weight, with each season before it carrying less and less.

Ok, I have heard reputable coaches come on and tell others essentially that "your prestige dropped because the 4th year (which was pretty good) of your window got elliminated and your last year you only reached round one of the nt"

Wagner actually went up to a C this year, just curious how this could happen since we lost the sweet 16 in our 4 year window.

noone knows any of this for a fact, nor to what degree any of this is true, but prestige is thought by the forum fact people to be weighted toward the most recent season, so evidentily a NT loss round 1 in year 1, outperforms a sweet 16 in year 4, either that or after 40 seasons or so in the game, you have found a glitch, which is possible

write a ticket up, see what CS says

Let me try and answer that ...

You are also talking about a change from C- to C which really could be very little change at all if one was on the border anyway.

nbs, part of the reason you didn't go up more is because that S16 fell off. To only move up from a C- to a C after a NT appearance is a smaller-than-normal move, even for a small conference team. I absolutely would've expected your prestige to increase after making the NT.

I've had CS confirm that the most recent season carries the most weight, though nothing has been quantified exactly.

It is not in any sense impossible to have your prestige increase simply because a good 4th season falls off. The examples we've seen with that usually involve a really tremendous 4th season falling off for a non-BCS team with high prestige. In those examples, it is extremely hard for non-BCS teams to maintain high prestige.

Since the 4 year window is more heavily weighted towards the most recent season, I think if you ignore the conference and just look at the individual team, the prestige should improve.

Let's say the multiplier is x8 for the most recent season, x4 for the previous season and x2 and x1 for seasons three and four.

For overall season comparisions let's assume the final season RPI and the post-season carry the same weight. (my post-season grades are based on where the teams finished up. If they lost in the first round of the NT, they were between 33rd-64th best teams and I award an average score of 49th. Lose in the Sweet 16, results in being amongst the 9th-16th best teams that season, and are assigned a 12th)

RPI POST AVG mult
33: 86 88 87 x8 = 696
32: 220 -- 220 x4 = 880
31: 178 -- 178 x2 = 356
30: 89 12 51 x1 = 51 1983/15 = 132.2

then adding the most recent season and dropping the Sweet Sixteen season:
RPI POST AVG mult
34: 57 49 53 x8 = 424
33: 86 88 87 x4 = 348
32: 220 -- 220 x2 = 440
31: 178 -- 178 x1 = 178 1390/15 = 92.7

Thx guys for the useful input. This is my first gig at a d1 school so obviously I still have a lot to learn. Iguana, that's an interesting way to look at it. I guess I was looking at a much smaller differencebetween the 4 years.

prestige is also based on conference prestige. It is possible to have a great season and drop in prestige if you have a weak conference last season.
