If I have room on my 40 man roster, and room on my major league roster, but I have 3 players waitting assignment will I still be able to draft someone in the rule 5 draft? Two of the three players are invite only players, so I dont want to assign them because right now they cost me $0, and the third was DFA'd.

This is a kind of loophole I think. As long as the 40-man slots are open, I'm pretty sure you will draft Rule 5 guys. You can make your decisions later as to who you want on your ML roster. I too have a couple of late FA pickups waiting to be assigned. They are in limbo til after the Rule 5 draft and they are not taking up any 40 man slots yet.

Yes you will.

Thanks guys! I dont think it is a loophole.. If I have a player who is an invite only, or who I have DFA'd I dont want that to be penalized for that.

It's a loophole. I protect 45-46 from the R5 draft every season. WifS either can't or won't fix it. Not sure which but I've sent tickets.

I no longer assign free agents that I sign untl after the R5 draft because of this. It is a huge loophole that should be fixed - but I see no reason to put myself at a disadvantage to the other 31 owners and not exploit it as WIS has known about it for quite some time and done nothing to correct it.

How would they fix it given the situation I laid out? If I DFA a player and am waiting for him to clear waivers he shouldn't count against my 40 man roster when coming to rule 5. I am assuming todays update when they said they put off the rule 5 changes had something to do with this.

No, the Rule 5 thing they ommitted had to do with salaries of returned R5 players.

When you DFA a guy he immeditely comes off your 40 and is exposed to the R5 draft. The issue is with signing big league free agents but not assigning them, therefore not putting them onto your 40 and keeping extra spots open

Well, there's that and sending multi-year players with options to AAA then removing them from the 40.
11/3/2009 10:29 AM
Hmmm, did not know this was possible....good to know.

I had 49 players "protected" one year.

I don't think that is a loophole though. Anyone under a multi-year contract is protected from the Rule 5 draft, regardless of whether or not they are on the 40.

You can remove them from the 40 and protect someone else. That's the loophole.
11/3/2009 11:50 AM
I've also sent tickets about this.
11/3/2009 11:50 AM
These loopholes are being closed in the next update.
